Mayor of Hoboken Says Hurricane Relief Was Threatened
Source: New York Times
ORLANDO, Fla. A swing through Florida proved no sunny retreat for Gov. Chris Christie on Saturday, as well-organized protesters hounded him outside a Republican fund-raiser here, a powerful ally in the New Jersey State House rebuked the governors office and new allegations emerged that his administration tried to intimidate a New Jersey elected official.
snip, to the best part:
Instead, the New Jersey governor was whisked into an event at the Country Club of Orlando, and, later, a fund-raiser at a Palm Beach home owned by the heir to a sugar fortune.
Inside, Mr. Christie found what must pass, at this difficult moment, as an oasis for him: a group of Ferrari and Jaguar-driving Florida Republicans for whom traffic in New Jersey is a distant thought.
Getting into his Bentley after the fund-raiser, one guest, Geoffrey Leigh, called the controversy over the lane closures little flies on the wall, quite frankly.

(2,749 posts)She was beside herself because her town wasn't getting any assistance rescuing people who had been trapped in their homes by the flooding. She was practically in tears, begging the National Guard to get there asap because they had the vehicles and equipment needed to get to people and they weren't coming. She's great.

(2,749 posts)Kind of lame, the way it is written. Or maybe I'm being too critical, but since it's the NY Times, I don't think so.

Of all the comments I've seen during this scandal that one make me the most angry.

(2,749 posts)A fly on the wall is an expression used to wish you could eavesdrop on someone or something behind closed doors. Used in this context makes zero sense. Maybe it's a language thing. At any rate the guy who said is a typical repuke for dismissing this as nothing important, just like so many other right wing shitheels are doing.

(67,782 posts)...the butthole that used it claims that the controversy (i.e. SCANDAL and ABUSE OF POWER) was just like flies on the wall, insignificant in the big picture. My comment was intended to point out that people were more than inconvenienced, and if his mother was the one who died during the roadblocks (more than mere "lane closures" would he still consider this a mere "controversy" and insignificant?

(2,749 posts)I don't understand why this jerk chose to say that cause it didn't make any sense, at least to me. Sounds like another wealthy idiot putting his foot in his mouth. They are really good at it too.

Could he have been any more condescending?

(5,400 posts)But these aren't normal times for New Jersey. There are committees that can issue subpoenas and there is a federal investigator. People will hear this story and they will wonder about the denials.

(10,107 posts)Another one of those inspirational pull yourself up by your bootstraps kind of story. Yeah, and I'm sure Christie preached the virtues of smalller government but didn't mention eliminating all the sugar subsidies. Just like all the Republican farmers in the Midwest that rail against the government but so eagerly await their farm subsidies from the same government they complain about.

(30,250 posts)They live in Palm Beach. I know people who are good friends with Pepe and I was once in his house. They are wealthy Cubans who fled the country after Castro took over in 1959. Like most of the old Cuban guard, they are staunch Republicans.
The family has sugar fields in Belle Glade and are very wealthy.

I guessed correctly:
"The Palm Beach fundraiser is slated to be held later Saturday (time unclear) at the private residence of Jose F. "Pepe" Fanjul, Jr., who runs the Florida Crystals empire."
