(CNN) -- U.S. President Barack Obama will visit Pope Francis, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said after his own stop at the Vatican Tuesday -- though it wasn't immediately clear when the meeting between President and pontiff will happen.

"I know that the Holy Father is anticipating the visit of President Obama here, and the President is looking forward to coming here to meet with him," Kerry said in Rome after meeting with Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Kerry and his counterpart discussed a range of issues, including the Middle East peace process and Africa.

He said the only person that might be able to help with the Middle East was the Pope. He felt that even though he might not have clout he would be recognized and have some respect on a certain level. I personally don't know what I think on this but it was an interesting thought.

I don't think Assad would have wasted a letter on him if the Pope didn't.
Though I think the Pope's clout extends more towards the second tier players (by second tier, I mean those not actually fighting): The US, Russia, UK, etc.
It is often hard to tell. We shall see.
