Veteran Congressman George Miller [D-CA] of Martinez will retire after 40 years in public office

MARTINEZ -- Democratic Rep. George Miller, one of 75 members of the Watergate class elected to Congress a few months after President Nixon resigned, will retire at the end of the year after serving 40 years in the House of Representatives.
The venerable Miller, now 68, informed his staff Monday morning of his decision. The 6-foot-4 inch mustachioed congressman made a public announcement at 10 a.m. in Richmond, the blue-collar town where he was born and the heart of the East Bay congressional district the unapologetic liberal has represented for almost four decades.
"About a year ago, my sons started saying, 'C'mon, Dad, it's been 40 years!'" Miller said during an interview at his Martinez home on Sunday afternoon. "It got me thinking about what I have accomplished in partnership with my staff in the past 40 years. I can look back on our body of work and be very proud of it. I hope my constituents are proud of it, too, because a lot of it is about Contra Costa County, the East Bay and the state.
"It seemed like a good marker. It was still a hard decision. But it felt right."
