(01-09) 17:03 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal grand jury has indicted alleged members of a gang in San Francisco's Western Addition on charges of racketeering, drug trafficking and three murders. Two defendants, one a convicted murderer, face a possible death sentence for a double murder in 2008.
Prosecutors said Thursday that nine members of the Central Divis Playas, and one associate of the gang, were indicted after an investigation by the FBI and San Francisco and San Pablo police.
Two defendants, Reginald Elmore and Charles Heard, are charged with the murders of Isaiah Turner, 34, and Andre Helton, 18, who were found shot to death in a parked car near the University of San Francisco in August 2008. Convictions would carry a life sentence, but Attorney General Eric Holder also has the option of seeking the death penalty, prosecutors said.
Heard was convicted by a Superior Court jury in 2010 of taking part in the November 2008 murder of Richard Barrett, 29, outside a North Beach bar.
