Nicaragua Deports US Man in Child Pornography Case
MANAGUA, Nicaragua January 10, 2014 (AP)

A Nicaraguan official says police have deported an American man who was convicted of child pornography possession in the United States and fled before sentencing.

National Police official Glenda Zavala says Cory Michael Papp was sent back to the United States on Thursday.

Zavala says the 37-year-old was detained at a police checkpoint in Nicaragua's central province of Chontales because he was traveling with an expired passport. She says an Interpol notice had been issued for Papp's arrest.

According to the FBI, Papp pleaded guilty in 2009 to child pornography charges after police in Oregon found more than 2,000 images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct in two computers he used at an Oregon State University library. They also found several CDs containing child pornography in his backpack.

Benton County Man Pleads Guilty to Possession of Child Pornography at the Oregon State University Valley Library

U.S. Attorney’s Office
June 23, 2009

District of Oregon
(503) 727-1000

EUGENE, OR—Cory Michael Papp, 33, formerly of Benton County, Oregon, pled guilty today in federal court to knowingly possessing computer disks and computer generated media that contained visual depictions of actual minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Sentencing is scheduled for September 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Michael R. Hogan.

On July 31, 2007 and August 1, 2007, Papp was observed viewing child pornographic images on computer terminals in the Valley Library at Oregon State University. Oregon State Police contacted Papp on August 1, 2007 while he was in the process of using a public computer terminal at the library. They took into evidence the hard drives of the two computers Papp had used, as well as the backpack Papp had in his possession. A search warrant was obtained for the backpack, and law enforcement officers found several CDs containing images of child pornography and child erotica in their search.

Computer forensics conducted by the Oregon State Police revealed over 2,237 images of actual and prepubescent minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children identified a number of known victims of child sexual abuse in the images found in Papp’s possession.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
