Mystery Bodies, Explosives Discovered Near Winter Olympics Site
Source: ABC News
Russian security forces launched an aggressive "anti-terrorism sweep" today after coming across multiple unexplained deaths and explosive devices in a region near Sochi, where the Winter Olympic Games will be held in a matter of weeks, according to Russian news reports.
A car with a body inside exploded as police approached it in Russia's Stavropol Territory, reported Russia's state-owned RIA Novosti, citing the Interior Ministry. In the same area, Russian authorities reportedly discovered a car containing the bodies of three men along with explosive material. The day before, two more bodies were found in cars the same region.
All of the victims appear to have been shot, according to a Russian security official and international news reports. Two were taxi drivers and another reportedly worked assembling furniture.
Russian officials are investigating the possible cause and motive for the deaths -- a Russia analyst speculated to ABC News the deaths could be related to organized crime -- but at any rate the mystery and the security sweep add to an already tense situation in southern Russia as the Olympics approach.

(14,139 posts)This is getting curioser and curioser.
One concern now is that the Russians have beefed up security so much at the Olympic venues that they're leaving other targets wide open and vulnerable.

(12,051 posts)used to go to some events because we just wanted to. Now, I'll watch it on TV or just pass it up.
I told Mr Nay weeks ago that I'd never go to Sochi for the Olympics -- I can't believe the place would be able to weed out every Chechen rebel or other malcontent that wanted to kill people. No, thank you.

(22,000 posts)They can't keep their own citizens safe.
The cost of the 2014 winter games has run higher than the last 5 combined.
Combined that with the anti-gay laws (although they were suspended, there's still no telling what effect they may have).
I'm not sure if the Olympic Committee got duped or they were just stupid.

(22,000 posts)Look at 9/11 for an example.
But Russia has countries around it where there is unrest. My question is (and I really don't know the answer to be honest with you) how secure are the boarders between places in that region? Some countries have more problems than others.
My feeling is that the Russians pulled the wool over the Olympic Committee's eyes on their security plan.
Russia wasn't the only nominee. So much second question is: Were they really the best choice?
My answer is no.

(10,575 posts)Up to the start of the Games, around 23 thousand personnel will carry out security measures, while around 40 thousand people will ensure safety during the Games.
The country is to spend around $2 billion on security, according to reports in the Russian media.
Many of the forces taking part in safeguarding the safety of the Games will take courses in English and alpinism, to be able to communicate with international guests, as well as to react in emergency situations in the mountainous areas.
Ships and submarines will protect the city from the sea, while helicopters and drones will take over the air defense of the area. Quad bikes will be used for security and safety operations in the mountains.
