Michael Schumacher, ex-F1 champion, critical after ski fall

Source: BBC

Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, is in a critical condition after a skiing accident, says the French hospital at which he is being treated. The 44-year-old German "was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival" the hospital in the south-east city of Grenoble said in a statement.

He was skiing off-piste with his son in the Alps when the accident occurred.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock, Meribel resort director Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte said earlier.

A lot of Germans considered him next to God, so I'm sure that many Germans are really upset as well as racing fans everywhere.

May he get well soon.

"Top Gear" just had him fill in for that one show so that Ferrari(?) would loan them the car for that one show.

Let's hope he recovers. I loved watching him race on TV. Definitely one of the most talented F1 drivers today.

Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition after undergoing a second brain operation following a skiing accident that has stunned drivers, fans and athletes around the world.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center said the retired racing driver arrived at the clinic in a coma on Sunday and underwent immediate surgery for a serious head trauma.

He then underwent a second procedure in which surgeons reportedly drilled holes in his skull to relieve pressure on his brain as they battled overnight to save him.

Former motor racing champion Michael Schumacher's condition has improved slightly after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain, his doctors have said.

A new scan taken overnight showed signs that he was "better than yesterday", but he was still "not out of danger", doctors said.
...
The family took the "difficult decision" to give consent for the procedure, and doctors operated on Schumacher for about two hours.

A subsequent scan revealed a "slight improvement".
