Dolan: Pope Francis Has 'Shattered The Caricature Of The Church'

CAITLIN MACNEAL DECEMBER 29, 2013, 12:10 PM EST
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, on Sunday praised Pope Francis for changing the way the world views the Catholic church.
"This pope has successfully, finally shattered the caricature of the church that his predecessors have tried hard to do," Dolan said on ABC's "This Week." "What's that caricature? That the church is kind of mean and dour and always saying no and always telling us what we can't do and always telling us why we should be excluded. He's saying, no, come on in, the church is about warmth and tenderness."
Dolan said that Catholic leaders were surprised by how effective Pope Francis has been at improving the image of the church.
"What we were after was a good pastor with a track record of solid administration but fatherly warm, tender care for the sheep, for his people," Dolan said. "And, boy, we got that on steroids with Pope Francis. He's the world's parish priest."

(2,529 posts)He's spoken out against women's reproductive choice and against gay rights and assisted in the cover-up and protection of pederast priests. He probably saw what Francis did to Cardinal Burke and sees the writing on the wall. A new era of liberalism in the church might not include a twisted right-wing dinosaur like him.

(6,262 posts)Met him twice in small gatherings. His "geniality" seemed forced to me, and this was before his bold moves to protect pedophiles and the church riches during his Wisconsin tenure.
Now trying to make it seem he likes Francis to curry favor, but I am sure he never voted for him in the conclave, but instead for himself.

(111,277 posts)While I welcome his economic pronouncements and the squirming it's causing among Catholic conservatives (Scalia, I'm looking at you), I know his views on half the human population were shaped in the Dark Ages and buried under the mountain of infallible misogyny from all the previous popes.
Dolan's talking through his own funny hat.

(19,348 posts)So far, Francis has changed the window dressing. Will he change or at least accept of aspects of the multi-cultural world?
Thank you Timmy for reminding of what a deceptive little sugar daddy whore you are,
"care for the sheep" indeed Mr. Dolan, only to be led to the slaughter if you do NOT comply with every teaching.

(5,018 posts)of course Dolan is happy that the very deliberate attempt to make the church look like "compassionate conservativism" is actually working, even among progressives.
The Pope is a fellow bigot like Dolan, they understand each other perfectly.

(27,451 posts)Sounds like he's kissing up. Dolan is one of the most divisive Cardinals out there. Guess he figures he'd better tone down his rhetoric a bit.
