After Christmas begins before the holiday

Source: AP-EXCITE

By MAE ANDERSON and ANNE D'INNOCENZIO

It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas?

On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday.

Amazon.com already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve.

Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas.

Valentine's day is upon us.

Was in the super market yesterday and YES there it was a display of Valentine candy boxes.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Sorry for the excess of exclamation points but I'm excited.

I'm old-school--Advent is over, Christmas is just beginning--talk to me about the end of the holiday season on January 7th!

Advent was somber. We didn't have tree in the house. I don't know how they did it, but while we were at midnight mass somebody (Santa) set up and dressed the tree with all the presents under it. When we got home we got to open one-only one gift. There were gifts from everyone to everyone-we kids found some way to give everyone something.

Upon waking was the big unwrapping. That was Christmas day. 12 day we had a king cake- Actually there were 2- one for the adults. who ever got the slice with the baby (we used a whole shelled pecan) was the king and got a crown was privileged to give out the gifts.

Meanwhile the adults had their cake and highballs. Who ever got the baby hosted the next party at their house. This went on every week until Mardi Gras. Lent came and the parties are over. No birthday parties - my BD fell quite often in Lent.

This was in New Orleans, 1950's.

And the shelves were being filled with Valentine candy while the Christmas stuff was tagged as 50% off. I figure in a couple weeks, the Valentines will be sharing space with the St. Patty's Day and Easter stuff.

Awhile back farmers were buying bulk wholesale lots when the price of feed corn skyrocketed.

Extending the season to increase decreasing margins from a typical 5 week holiday retail season into 6-7 weeks.
