Ohio man who amassed guns at mall faces sentencing

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A man who prosecutors say wanted to start a race war is set for sentencing after pleading guilty to stockpiling weapons at a northern Ohio shopping mall.

Richard Schmidt of Toledo will be sentenced there Thursday in federal court.

Prosecutors say Schmidt amassed guns and ammunition and was planning to carry out assassinations against minorities. The FBI told black and Jewish leaders in Ohio and Michigan that their names were on a list kept by Schmidt.

His attorney calls the accusations "over-the-top."

TOLEDO, Ohio — A man, fearing doomsday, who stockpiled weapons and ammunition at a northern Ohio shopping mall has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison.

Prosecutors alleged Richard Schmidt of Toledo was planning to carry out a race war, but the federal judge who sentenced Schmidt on Thursday said there wasn't enough evidence to support that claim.

Schmidt's attorney said his client had the guns and other survival gear because he was preparing for a potential doomsday calamity.

Federal agents discovered the weapons at the mall where Schmidt operated a store. They also found a list that included the names of black and Jewish leaders in Ohio and Michigan.

Schmidt told the judge he never should have written the list, but added that he never intended to harm anyone.

Look, just because a guy is stockpiling enough guns and ammo in the back of his store for a small Central American revolution, has a bunch of neo-Nazi literature, and keeps a list of black and Jewish leaders from all over Ohio and Michigan, that doesn’t mean he was preparing for a race war. Maybe he’s merely a survivalist with a keen interest in the goodwill of minority communities after civilization falls apart, and just wanted to be ready to help them rebuild? And so, since the judge wasn’t convinced by the prosecution’s theory that Toledo, Ohio, business owner Richard Schmidt was planning a campaign of assassination, Schmidt was sentenced Thursday to almost six years in prison, not the 10 years that he could have received.

It’s a victory for racists everywhere — collect all the guns you want, but insist you’re just getting ready for a zombie apocalypse.
