Target victim of major credit card breach

Payment card data was stolen from an unknown number of Target Corp customers starting on the busy Black Friday weekend in a major breach at the U.S. retailer, according to a person familiar with matter.

Investigators believe the data was obtained via software installed on machines that customers use to swipe magnetic strips on their cards when paying for merchandise at Target stores, according to the person who was not authorized to discuss the matter.

Krebs on Security, a blog that first reported the news, said that breach involved nearly all Target outlets in the United States, citing sources at two credit card issuers.

The breach could have extended from just after Thanksgiving to December 15, Krebs said, citing evidence from investigators.

and possibly get a replacement card (number) from your credit card company. In the end it will be the credit card company that takes the hits. For those who used debit cards, I would check with your bank promptly and get a new card.

Retailer Target revealed Thursday that 40 million of its customers’ credit and debit card accounts may have been revealed to cyber-criminals who gained unauthorized access to the store’s payment card data.

The company said the customer names, debit or credit card numbers, card expiration dates were taken, along with the three-digit security codes often imprinted on the backs of cards, known as CVVs. With that information, it would be easy for criminals to ring up purchases at most Web sites. The company said it immediately notified law enforcement authorities and financial institutions after discovering the breach, though this is its first notice to customers.

The breach affected those shopping at the height of the holiday shopping season, Target said, between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15. Consumers and companies are at particularly high-risk for data breaches during the holidays, as the increased volume of transactions can mask other irregularities that can tip companies off to a problem.

“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” said Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s chairman, president and chief executive officer in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.”

They both said there were charges made to an "online dating service" for amounts under $10. The banks told them that this is something hackers/identity thieves sometimes do to check to see if it's working--rack up some small charge first--and that the "online dating service" probably isn't even a real thing. Anyhow, I was surprised. There were only 8 students in class tonight (Friday night class right before Christmas), and 2 had been affected.

I guess I need to get a new debit card. I shop at Target a lot because it's the closest store to my house. Bummer.

as a way to make amends for the cc snafu. Worked great for me, I had to purchase about $120 in items anyway. But for the next two months or so, I will need to check my CC transactions twice daily, since I used that card at Target during the period the hackers operated.

and let them know I used my card there. I'm keeping my eye on my statement. Ordered a new debit card from my credit union. My current one is now cancelled. Guess that's all I can do for now!
