Rush Limbaugh's 'Slut' Attack Costs Him Advertisers
Source: New York Magazine
Call him what you will shock jock, blowhard, gross sexist monster but Rush Limbaugh is sticking by his decision to call Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" for her congressional testimony supporting contraception coverage. This much was clear on Thursday when, instead of apologizing for his remarks, Limbaugh channeled Santorum sugar daddy Foster Friess and promised to "buy all of the women at Georgetown University as much aspirin to put between their knees as they want." Now, advertisers are pulling out of his radio show, including, somewhat ironically, mattress manufacturers Sleep Train and Sleep Number. (Quicken Loans, a mortgage refinancing company, also suspended its ads after reviewing "feedback" from their clients and staff.)
And it's likely that more of Limbaugh's sponsors will make for the exits, now that a full-scale boycott effort is underway on Twitter (spearheaded by @StopRush, an online activist who led a boycott of Glenn Beck's Fox News show in 2009) and with the Daily Kos circulating a petition urging advertisers to join the protest.
Limbaugh may also soon face a lawsuit. Fluke herself has not ruled out the possibility and, even if she doesn't take legal action, it seems the Democrats will: New York's own Representative Carolyn Maloney yesterday told an audience in the city that "we will be filing a slander suit against Rush Limbaugh."

(2,261 posts)That image is not the right image.
I'd like to see 12 or 24 or Rush's advertisers withdraw their support for his show.
I'd like to see this be the ultimate end of radio airways domination by irresponsible, illogical, primal, pugalistic, personshoods in the form of fat old men with documented problems getting an erection!
Let's find a way to marry Rush's blathering with the hue ad cry of the Republican Congress people and Presidential candidates vying against Barack Obama, himself not totally everything we wished for when we voted for him in 2008, but, obviously, Obama is more like US than like those who listen to Rush.

(111,267 posts)Calling Flute a prostitute is actionable. Malice will be easy to prove, he's got a long history of malice toward all women except whatever "beard" he's keeping to work as his hostess. And maybe even her.
Protest letters to local radio stations that carry the dirtball are also a great idea. These are our airwaves and we need to clean them up of hate instead of the occasional f-bomb. A cc to the FCC is necessary, of course.
He has needed to go for a long time.
I not only want him off the air and living in obscurity, telling everybody at the 19th hole what a big shot he used to be, I want him poor. Lawsuits are good.

(51,564 posts)I submitted the following complaint of "Obscene, Profane, and/or Indecent Material":
____________________________________________________
Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday 02/29/2012 called Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University law student, a "slut" and a "prostitute" for publicly advocating that employers cover contraception in their health plans. But instead of apologizing for his offensive comments on his show Thursday, 03/01/2012, he made even worse statements:
"A Georgetown coed told Nancy Pelosi's hearing that the women in her law school program are having so much sex they're going broke, so you and I should have to pay for their birth control. So what would you call that? I called it what it is," he said. "So, I'm offering a compromise today: I will buy all of the women at Georgetown University as much aspirin to put between their knees as they want."
Fluke's testimony in the hearing was not, as Limbaugh claimed, about the fact that she's "having so much sex she's going broke buying contraceptives." She told the story of her friend who had an ovary removed because the insurance company wouldn't cover the prescription birth control she needed to stop the growth of ovarian cysts.
Limbaugh concluded his sexist rant by insisting that if women want their contraception covered, they should post pornographic videos of themselves online. "So Miss Fluke and the rest of you feminazis, here's the deal," he said. "If we are going to pay for your
contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

(6,228 posts)Maher, Stewart, Colbert, etc. said many things about him (with Maher being the nastiest). Frankly, I did not mind, as it benefited our side politically. However, when there were issues about it, the comments here were "he is merely an entertainer." Notions of Joe the Plumber suing these people were lauded by the right and laughed at by the left.
In all, it was the same thing. At least I have the balls to admit I am a hypocrite about it, as getting Limpballs off the air benefits us.

(14,857 posts)How fucking stupid do you have to be to make up such an easily debunked story and tell it in front of a TV camera? And then to get in front of the cameras again and again to complain that you got called out on your bullshit story.
But, I guess that exactly the same as testifying before Congress about how a particular law/bill/proposal will affect people. And being called a liar for lying and being called a slut and prostitute for favoring insurance coverage of contraception is the same, too.
tularetom
(23,664 posts)His name wasn't joe and he wasn't a plumber.
Furthermore unlike Ms Fluke he didn't stand for anything except perhaps tax cuts for the wealthy, on the questionable premise that he hoped to be wealthy someday.
To compare him to Sandra Fluke is to carry the liberal media "both sides are equally guilty" theme to absurdity,
niyad
(113,325 posts)attendant insult that word implies, and then, be good enough to show us who used that word against that lying waste of skin known as joe the plumber--especially here on DU
No.
False equivalence to START...
nolabear
(41,984 posts)then it would be a very good idea for you to talk to some women. There's no equivalent for men, a fact that in itself says it all. A woman who's called a slut or a prostitute experiences a sense of danger, of being treated like a piece of meat with no value, who can be done with as men see fit. Trust me on this. Times have changed some, but in a world where women are raped as an act of war and possession, and are burned alive, stoned, mutilated, and so forth for a simple accusation of being in control of their own sex lives, where in this country I personally can remember when back alley abortions ripped out the uteruses of teenaged girls who were afraid of being called sluts by their families and communities, using that language is nothing, NOTHING like calling Joe the Plumber an idiot and a liar.

Did he say lately he was going to run for congress, then what happened later?

(83 posts)I just read the press release from Carbonite CEO, David Friend. Good grief, his comments should be an example of how NOT be a leader. He neither supported or denounced Limbaugh. Mr. Friend acknowledges the many comments, but does not actually say anything at all. Furthermore, his PR management should really think about their lack of position here, it just looks weak!

There are plenty of other ways to spend advertising $. And if their customers are telling them Rush doesn't "delight" them, how are they "delighting" their customers with the response that basically tells customers to go jump in the lake, as my late grandma would have put it?
