LINCOLN Gov. Dave Heineman has canceled a controversial legislative study on the effects of climate change in Nebraska, saying it would duplicate work by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The governor on Tuesday directed the state Department of Agriculture to stop seeking proposals for the climate study. In a letter to state lawmakers, he said he will not request a $44,000 appropriation for the study in the 2014 budget.
The issue ignited controversy in October when UNL scientists refused to participate in a study designed to exclude human activity as a possible factor in climate change. UNLs Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources said it would do its own study, which would include the role of humans.
Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm, the sponsor of the legislative study, has said it didnt make sense to spend money for an incomplete analysis. Last week, he asked the governor to pull the study proposal.
