George Zimmerman had five guns when arrested: police
Source: NBC News
George Zimmerman possessed five guns including an AR-15-type rifle when he was arrested last week and accused of pointing one of the weapons at his girlfriend, according to documents released by police.
The other firearms included a Keltec shotgun and three handguns, and Zimmerman also had 127 rounds of ammunition for the weapons, the papers say.
Zimmerman who was acquitted over the summer of second-degree murder in the shooting of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin was arrested Nov. 18 and charged with aggravated assault after a confrontation with Samantha Scheibe at a home in Apopka, Fla.
He was released on $9,000 bond and told he could not have any firearms. He entered a written plea of not guilty, and his former lawyers said last week that they expected he would be cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.

(1,290 posts)There were (and still unfortunately, ARE) MANY NRA types who considered Zimmerman a "responsible" gun owner long after he pulled the trigger. The only reason some of these people are having reservations about his character now, is because he got violent with a white person.

(115,679 posts)So based on who you are and how many guns you own, do you believe Z should be permitted to own five guns? What makes a person eligible or ineligible? Also, how are more than five useful, i.e. if you were permitted only one would the quality of your life be negatively affected?

(5 posts)I sincerely hope Trayvon's killer, Zimmerman, eventually receives justice. Most importantly, before it costs another innocent life to be lost. Zimmerman obviously has some anger issues that should preclude him from ever handling a deadly firearm.

(3,596 posts)Look at OJ Simpson. I think most rational individuals believe he was responsible for the murder of his lovely wife and her friend Ron Goldman. He had a dream defense team and a trial that became a circus, totally unmanaged by judge Ito.
He got away with murder. He felt emboldened as if he was made of teflon. He had numerous altercations when he moved to Florida after the civil case awarded the Goldman family millions. He declared bankruptcy but knew Florida allows an unlimited homestead exemption.
Regardless of the circumstances that brought him to that Las Vegas hotel that night, the facts are that he went with the intent to use violence to "retrieve" some personal property.
This time he didn't have the dream defense team and the judge managed the courtroom. Justice was served and was sentenced to what will amount to the rest of his life. I recently heard he was hoping for a new trial.
As it was with OJ so to I think it will be with Zimmerman. Unfortunately I fear there will be more violence that results in harm or death before he is ultimately stopped.
I wish I had more confidence in the Florida justice system. It seems they are very effective at incarcerating for minor drug offenses but not for capital murder or threatening to use violence on another.

(8,821 posts)Unless your rabbit is sitting right at your feet, a long arm style shotgun is likely to be much more useful.

hack89
(39,171 posts)While guns that meet all federal laws regarding barrel and overal length should be legal . Isn't that why we have laws in the first place? An 18.5" barrel is not sawn off by any objective standard.
We have had a law that has worked fine for 80 years. A law that the company that made this gun followed.
