BREAKING: Hawaii governor signs marriage equality bill into law

Source: LGBTQNATION

HONOLULU — Hawaii governor Neil Abercrombie has signed legislation to make the Aloha State the 15th in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage.

The law takes effect Dec. 2.

“In Hawaii, we believe in fairness, justice and human equality,” Abercrombie said Tuesday after the state Senate gave final approval to the bill. “Today, we celebrate our diversity defining us rather than dividing us.”

Hawaii’s same-sex marriage debate began in 1990 when two women applied for a marriage license, leading to a court battle and a 1993 Hawaii Supreme Court decision that said their rights to equal protection were violated by not letting them marry.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I am so proud that Massachusetts was the first. Not 100% proud of the way it happened, but, after all, our state legislature was bucking the trend and this is a very Catholic state (and so many of our legislators are also Catholic). And the important thing is that it happened, not how it happened. In the end, they did the correct thing.

Now...the greeting card industry has to catch up - we had a hard time finding a wedding card for our nephew last summer.

Well, there's a business opportunity for you. Go for it. Anniversary cards, birthday to my spouse (or husband or wife), etc. Sell online so people in all the good states have access.

I won't even take a finder's fee.

While you're at it, I have a relative I don't like at all but send birthday and Christmas cards to because my family would decapitate me if I didn't. I can't be the only one with this problem.

But whenever you shop for a card that is designated To my (family member), they all gush so much that I cannot bring myself to buy them. I think my blood pressure goes up just reading them.

So, twice a year, I am on a hunt for a card that is polite, slightly warm, but does not gush about how wonderful and loving the person is and how much you adore them.

There you go, two greeting card markets that the are not currently being taken care of.

I hope you make millions.

Though, Cape Cod is nice unique and lovely and, we have so many good things to see in Boston that the whole city is a national park. And you can do a side trip to Lexington to see the place where the shot heard 'round the world was fired.

But, if you want to get to Hawaii right after the ceremony, we'd understand.

to same-gender couples, the avalanche will happen.

We cannot have a society in which a couple married in one state is not married in another or a couple divorced in one state is not divorced in another or that child custody cases are not respected or contracts.

That was the failure of the Articles of Confederation which were flawed due to their concern about creating a national government that was too strong and with too much power. The Constitution was needed to give the federal government certain enumerated but meaningful powers.

While matters of marriage and "family law" have been the purview of the states, we have seen where the federal government by way of constitutional limitation have intervened. This was most powerfully expressed in Loving v. Virginia when the U.S. Supreme Court held that laws proscribing the marriage of two individuals of different races (read as black on white) were unconstitutional.

It is only a matter of time before this happens. As a man in my mid 50s, I never thought I would live to see that day but I am increasingly surprised by the change in public attitudes and full well expect to see this before I move on to some other existence.

Benefitting ALL types of families, it allowed any two adults who cannot legally marry to form a civil partnership. Now that marriage is the best option, it should be extended to all.
