NSA’s Keith Alexander questions Washington Post report (re: Google & Yahoo)

Source: Politico

The leader of the National Security Agency on Wednesday aired skepticism about a new report that the U.S. government had infiltrated the links between Google’s and Yahoo’s data centers.

“I don’t know what the report is,” said Gen. Keith Alexander when asked at a cybersecurity summit, adding the NSA is “not authorized” to access companies’ data centers and instead must “go through a court process” to obtain such content. “Not to my knowledge,” the general said when asked whether the NSA tapped the data centers.

Alexander’s denial follows a report in The Washington Post — based on documents leaked by Edward Snowden — that the NSA secretly mined the connection between Google’s and Yahoo’s data hubs. The project, code named MUSCULAR and targeting data centers located around the world, granted the NSA access to hundreds of millions of accounts, including those owned by Americans, the Post indicated. The program appears to differ from PRISM, another initiative revealed by Snowden and permitted under U.S. law that allows the NSA to obtain data from Internet companies directly.

For their part, Google and Yahoo both told the Post it hadn’t granted the NSA access to its data centers. Both companies did not immediately comment for this story. The NSA also wasn’t immediately available for comment...

He does it for a living. I don't blame him for this; I just can't believe anything he says.

Notice he said that they didn't tap the data centers. That is true. What they tapped is the links between the data centers. (per the report) The reporters who ask these questions need to be VERY specific with their questions.
They aren't technical enough to understand the difference..
