(Reuters) - Egyptian police fired teargas at protesting students at Cairo's al-Azhar university on Wednesday hours after authorities announced the detention of Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam El-Erian, part of a crackdown against the Islamist movement.
Students at the country's top institution for Islamic teachings have been demonstrating for weeks in support of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, whom the army toppled in July after mass protests against his rule.
The head of al-Azhar university had called on the police to enter campus grounds to "protect souls and properties", according to an interior ministry statement.
Demonstrations at Al-Azhar are a sensitive matter because the institution has historically toed the government line.

Egypt: Police storm university after student siege .
CAIRO (AP) -- Egyptian security forces have stormed the main building of an Islamic university in Cairo after students who support the country's ousted president besieged and attacked the offices of the university's chief administrator.
According to reports on Egyptian media, the police responded to a call for help from the university chief of Al-Azhar on Wednesday.
The students' assault came hours after security forces arrested a key figure of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's leading Islamist group from which ousted President Mohammed Morsi also hails.
Mustafa el-Agrawi, Al-Azhar's legal adviser, told the ONTV private channel that the students besieged the administrative building, locking up the university chief and several other administrators.
