HELSINKI (AP) - Nokia reported Tuesday a third-quarter loss as sales at the handsets unit it is selling to Microsoft continued to plunge. But the company gave a positive outlook on continuing operations, including the networks unit, causing the share price to surge.
Third-quarter net loss of 91 million euros ($125 million) compared with a net loss of 969 million euros a year earlier, while revenue fell more than 20 percent to 5.6 billion euros.
But the struggling company said its network operations saw net profit grow 33 percent and was expected to have a positive operating margin of up to 12 percent in the last quarter, with "solid net sales growth on a sequential basis."
Nokia's share price closed up 7 percent higher at 5.34 euros in Helsinki.

(13,920 posts)How do you have 200% sales growth from the previous year, 19% growth from the previous quarter, a growth in net profit, and a net loss at the same time?
I can understand why any of these things would be true. The 520 seems to be the best deal on the market, though it does have some flaws (Haptic feedback anyone?). I dont quite see why a normal person would want to pay the price for the new model with a 35 megapixel camera, though.

(7,638 posts)Slimmer and has a 41 megapixel camera. Well the new old one(1020) . I have it and I can't see a thing wrong with it. I don't live in a app driven world, so I don't need the ayePhone to send me to app heaven. And I am pretty enough so it really isn't necessary.
I don't like the insanity of the rageDroid. That whole line is a mess. I feel insane when I use a rageDroid.
Numbers I don't know. Could be from stock, debt, who know. But they have shown growth every quarter in units shipped. My guess is that the BB people are jumping ship.
What's the deal with haptic? I never use it, I Can see what I type and I don't need the added distraction.

(13,920 posts)I dont know how it is on the 1020 or the new one (sorry i misquoted the mp, either way thats rediculous for a phone camera, in my opinion) but on the 520, you can not turn off the haptic feedback on the three buttons across the bottom of the screen. I got one for a great price, and then spent a lot of time trying to find a way to disable the haptic feedback, only to find its hardwired into the programming. Not the hardware, the programming. You can turn it off for most things, but not the three buttons. I hate it. A lot. And instead of spending a few minutes to patch the system and fix it, Nokia spent a couple years ignoring the issue, apparently in the belief that if you buy the low end model, you dont deserve to have a pleasant user experience.

(5,023 posts)Everything else is fine, but maps integration is awful. For instance I just typed 'Walgreens' and it came up with a list of Walgreens in downtown Chicago. I'm 50 miles from there. GPS is lacking tremendously compared to other phones. So I'll be getting Apple or Android next time, if they don't improve in this area.

(3,769 posts)Make sure your GPS is turned on and working correctly.
The GPS has to be individually turned on in each app.

(392 posts)Nokia Lumia sales hit record 8.8 million in Q3, North America doubles
http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/29/5041666/nokia-lumia-sales-q3-2013
Nokia has once again managed to improve its Lumia sales figures worldwide. The latest Q3 earnings show another improvement, up to 8.8 million in the latest quarter. That's an increase on the record high of 7.4 million in the last quarter, and up over 200 percent from just 2.9 million in the same quarter last year. Through September 30th, Nokia sold 36.1 million Lumias in total since the company shipped its first Windows Phone device, the Lumia 800, in November 2011.
North American device sales improved significantly from the previous quarter, reaching 1.4 million shipped in total during Q3, a 366 percent increase year over year and double the previous record of 700,000. Nokia shipped 500,000 devices in North America during the previous quarter. Lumia shipments have improved dramatically this time around as part of Nokia's "rolling thunder" approach to the US. While its been a slow and bumpy project so far, with dips and increases over the lifetime of North American Lumia sales, the 1.4 million shipments show that budget handsets like the Lumia 521 and Lumia 520 are working to push volumes in the US. Nokia also released its Verizon flagship, the Lumia 928, on May 16th, so we've now had a full quarter of both the Lumia 521 and 928.
