McCain: ENDA Could Lead To 'Busing,' 'Reverse Discrimination

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – OCTOBER 29, 2013, 6:38 PM EDT

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Tuesday that he has not yet decided whether he will support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace, due to concerns that it might lead to "busing" and "reverse discrimination."

McCain said that sometimes when laws that promote equality include provisions with quotas, the legislation fails to address inequality.

"Whether it imposes quotas, whether it has reverse discrimination, whether it has the kinds of provisions that really preserve equal rights for all citizens or, like for example, busing. Busing was done in the name of equality. Busing was a failure. Quotas were a failure," McCain told the Huffington Post. "A lot of people thought they were solutions. They weren't. They bred problems."

McCain added that others, young people in particular, agree with him.

At the time of the civil rights movement, blacks were highly concentrated together and very segregated from the general population. In order to ensure equality of education busing was mandated.

The situation with the LGBT community is arguably very different. Yes there are gay "ghettos" in nearly every major metropolitan community. These are the "mecca" calls especially for younger LGBT individuals.

But the reality is LGBT individuals exist, often without notice, in all communities.

So the expectation of "busing" is highly inappropriate and suggests McCain hasn't been around lately.

All ENDA attempts to do is say that you cannot discriminate in employment, housing, etc. simply because a person is or appears to be LGBT.

Talk about "freedom". We should be free from discrimination.

I can hear, however, the howls from the right....as Christians who hate the Gay we should be able to discriminate.

To that I say, if I ask you if you are a Christian can I deny you to rent an apartment? No. That is protected.

So how, exactly are Christians being discriminated against? As a gay man and a Christian, I am missing the discrimination part.

Fun movie.

But it seems McCrank has transported himself back 50 years or so, which I guess is better than the 100 years or more repigs generally go back to when they're not thinking "Leave it to Beaver" is what contemporary families should be.

And "reverse discrimination" rarely exists, and is an oxymoron, of course. Discrimination is just that, no matter who does it. And, as to his other comment:

"A lot of people thought they were solutions. They weren't. They bred problems."

Yes, that sums up the repigs nicely.
