Mormons posthumously baptize slain Jewish reporter Daniel Pearl
Records indicate Pearl was baptized by proxy on June 1, 2011 at a Mormon temple in Twin Falls, Idaho, in practice that recently raised public outcry.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints posthumously baptized slain Jewish reporter Daniel Pearl last year, the Boston Globe reported on Wednesday.
Pearl was kidnapped in Pakistan's biggest city of Karachi in January 2002, where he was researching a story for the Wall Street Journal on Islamist militants, and was later beheaded.
The Globe learned of the posthumous baptism from Helen Radkey, an excommunicated Mormon, who said she had found a record of the baptism that records indicate Pearl was baptized by proxy on June 1, 2011 at a Mormon temple in Twin Falls, Idaho.

(3,596 posts)What is more arrogant and inhuman than to posthumously desecrate another human being. Who are the Mormons to know better than Mr. Pearl during his lifetime. Had he wanted to join the LDS church, wear magic underwear and do everything to get his own planet in the afterlife, he would have.

(5,074 posts)Is a post about the rabbi who bar mitzvahed Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and John Taylor and then gay-married them to each other, because they believed in polygamy. Payback's fair, right?

That said, I don't think Mitt needs to answer for what all Mormons do. There is no end to that road.

(10,857 posts)In my capacity as a Minister of the Universal Life Church, I regularly pray to have rational thought and empathy bestowed upon my brethren and those of other beliefs.
It, uh, doesn't work. But it's pretty fun, anyway.
ULC is, of course, the same prestigious institution which bestowed a Ph.D upon Hunter Thompson--a quite unique seal of approval. Thereafter, Thompson insisted upon being addressed as, "Doctor."

(724 posts)I'm also a minister of the Universal Life Church. I became a minister because the Catholic church refused to marry a couple of friends more than 12 years ago.
Since then, I have married dozens of my friends and relatives without religious affiliations. But since I've married them all, I think that makes me Mormon, gay and incestuous.
It's a wonderful life!

I expect that some day I'll really have to do it. Some couples will happily risk going to Hell rather than cancel a wedding.

(1,113 posts)records on my Irish born paternal Grandparents. The Church of latter day saints has an extremely large data base of genealogical records from various countries including the US. There was a big uproar when it was found out that they were postumously baptizing those Irish ancestors and I assume others from all the countries they collect data on. So I assume they have been doing this for a long time. They aren't going to stop, they just apologize then continue in secret. Very, very strange.

(5,763 posts)Even funnier, they're proxy baptisms and weddings, meaning that believers have to actually stand in for the dead. I wonder if the believer goes through life with boasting rights that they stood-in for John Kennedy?

Am I going to have to put it in my will that the absolutely will not convert me when after I'm dead? I'm waiting for a family of the deceased to sue the Mormons for doing it.
