5 dead in Brooklyn stabbing rampage, including 4 children
Source: Detroit Free Press
NEW YORK New York City police pressed forward Sunday in investigating the deaths of four children and a 37-year-old woman who were stabbed at a Brooklyn residence, saying a person of interest had been taken into custody.
Officers arrived at the scene and found all five victims unconscious and unresponsive, police said. A 1-year-old boy and two girls, ages 7 and 9, were pronounced dead at the residence by emergency responders.
A boy, 5, and the woman were taken to two Brooklyn hospitals where they were pronounced dead, police said.
Authorities were withholding the victims names until family members had been properly notified.

(31,493 posts)it is too late to use it. That is why police shoot them rather than trying to subdue them. Usually you wouldn't know a person is about to attack with a knife until they are almost within stabbing distance. Those who think that carrying a gun will protect them from a person with a knife are fooling themselves.
Banning knives? LOL ok ...I don't think you are going to see responders saying that. WTF are you going to cut your steak with?

(2,367 posts)more difficult. All you need for a knife is any piece of metal, glass, or hard plastic that can be sharpened. Prisoners make them, and the outside world has a lot more access to the materials (and no "contraband searches" .

(61 posts)You'd probably be safer in NYC since theres a heavy police presence and very harsh gun regulations compared to the rest of the country.

(27,452 posts)I get gun violence. It's easy. Just pull the trigger. You don't even have to be up close. There's a physical separation between the killer and the victim.
But this is so personal; and to do it over and over and over to multiple children. There really are no words.

Well the actual statistics would disagree with you. As a PROSECUTOR I have seen numerous nsanity defenses never go to trial because the defendant would be found not competent to stand trial in the first place.
This increased coverage gives the impression that the defense is widely used, but this is not the case. According to an eight-state study, the insanity defense is used in less than 1% of all court cases and, when used, has only a 26% success rate

MY TAKE
My point to the poster was----- "maybe" the guy was truly crazy. I have no other evidence to suggest that other than the news report.
I found out. over the years, that a prosecutor/defense attorney needs all of the evidence available to form a reasonable opinion.
Although to commit this murder as the report alleges it would (in my experience) take a real nut job to get so up close and personal with knives, blood and mayhem toward the defenseless children.
And if he was on drugs and it can be proven as you suggest---an insanity defense becomes very problematic.
Thank you for asking

(30,250 posts)This is local for me because I'm right across the Hudson river from NYC. The news said that he said to a cop that he was upset because they had so much and he had so little. He's apparently and illegal immigrant from China. His cousin and her family were helping him out.
They said that he also used a cleaver and that the youngest child was decapitated. The woman's sister arrived with her husband at the house. She went in and was the one who caught him in the act. She ran out and the husband called 911.
