Inmate allowed to publish book on aggressive dogs
State prison officials announced a settlement Tuesday with a maximum-security inmate that will allow him to publish a book about how he bred and trained aggressive dogs, including the Presa Canarios that killed a San Francisco woman in her apartment corridor.
The state had barred Dale Bretches from publishing his book, "Dog O' War," and distributing it in the prison system. The agreement lifts that ban, although individual wardens may be allowed to keep the book out of their prisons because of specific security concerns, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The book will remain banned at Pelican Bay State Prison in Del Norte County, where Bretches is housed. The settlement will take effect once the two sides agree on a charity to receive any profits from publication, because prison rules prohibit inmates from running businesses.
Bretches, who turn 56 on Friday, was convicted of second-degree murder in 1979 for a fatal barroom beating in San Diego. Prison officials said they were unaware that he and cellmate Paul "Cornfed" Schneider, both members of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, ran a dog-breeding business with the help of outsiders. They placed two Presa Canarios with San Francisco attorneys Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel.
