Before it was a plot point for the fictional vice president on Showtime’s Homeland, former Vice President Dick Cheney feared terrorists could hack his defibrillator.

In a “60 Minutes” interview to air Sunday, Cheney said his doctor disabled the wireless feature on his implanted heart device so that a terrorist couldn’t use it to somehow send a shock to his heart and induce cardiac arrest.

Cheney said he has seen the episode of Homeland in which a terrorist uses that method to kill the vice president and that he’d already known “from the experience we had … that it was an accurate portrayal of what was possible.”

Seeing this article prompted me to sign up and respond. Just recent a young hacker mysteriously died the morning before he was giving a conference on how to hack a pacemaker. Totally weird for sure. I would ask for the wireless feature to be disabled, too. Wireless items are too easy to hack.

So unless someone can hold a magnet to the device, no possibility of "hacking" it. And that isn't even a "anti-hacking" feature, it's a power saving feature.

Disable the radio completely and it can neither be reprogrammed to suit changing health needs nor provide diagnostic info to physicians.
