WHO agency : Air pollution causes cancer
Source: Associated Press
LONDON (AP) -- What many commuters choking on smog have long suspected has finally been scientifically validated: air pollution causes lung cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer declared on Thursday that air pollution is a carcinogen, alongside known dangers such as asbestos, tobacco and ultraviolet radiation. The decision came after a consultation by an expert panel organized by IARC, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, which is based in Lyon, France.
"We consider this to be the most important environmental carcinogen, more so than passive smoking," said Kurt Straif, head of the IARC department that evaluates cancer-causing substances.
IARC had previously deemed some of the components in air pollution such as diesel fumes to be carcinogens, but this is the first time it has classified air pollution in its entirety as cancer causing.

(5,113 posts)wood burning is the most toxic form of air pollution.
the anti-pollution devices applied to modern, WELL MAINTAINED
vehicles has made the biggest of differences.
Alternative technologies have and will continue to improve the situation
There are other measures that need to be taken and increased,
but kneejerk blame laying is a red herring sushi dish in this case.
you blame car owners rather than a petrochemically controlled regulatory
and infrastructure choking mad house of money?
thats pretty sad.

(225 posts)If you have a car, live in or near a city and never use the bus AND/or HAVE CHILDREN you share the blame! Trains, Buses, bikes are all alternatives THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T UTILIZE BECAUSE OF CONVENIENCE.
Now look at the size and health of people and tell me that "convenience" isn't killing them?!?!?!

(6,896 posts)but owning a car, or even a whole lot of them, doesnt mean you cant bicycle.
And neither of those possibilities means that the local municipality is pro-mass transit,
let alone responsible towards the needs of taxpayers who need it.
When buses dont service real working hours of poor people, its a joke.
I suggest putting the blame where it belongs, on the responsible parties.
Red herrings accomplish nothing.
Local perspectives are not universally applicable, so its worth considering
the numerous misfortunes and circumstances of others, and not just lashing out.
especially at some subset.
I guess there are states that do not mandate smog controls and plenty of violators
who should be taken down for it. Either way,
wood burning and other forms of unmitigated waste incineration is as much to blame as
anything. talk about "convenience"

(3,557 posts)Isn't it our god-given right as Americans to pollute the air and the world? We are entitled to cancer and we are entitled to spread it to the rest of the world! We are Americans!
Oh well, I guess it is all part of the UN and Obama's scheme to take over the US and to turn our nation into a dictatorship. I better head back down to my bunker and wait for the UN troops to invade our country :leaving:

On a serious note, who would have guessed that a bunch of unnatural chemicals floating around our environment in (sometimes startlingly) high concentrations could lead to cancer. To me, it seems intuitive.

(5,113 posts)(kind of like a cold porridge) with a spoon, works much better than just drinking.
I better try that now, after I was called Sid, and told that I should blame "petrochemically controlled regulatory
and infrastructure choking mad house of money" instead of car owners.
