Senate reaches deal to end shutdown and avoid default

Source: NBC NEWS

Senate leaders said Wednesday that they had reached an agreement to end a protracted government shutdown and avert default on the national debt.

"The compromise we reached will provide our economy with the stability it desperately needs," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said shortly after noon on the Senate floor.

Congress will now attempt to quickly advance the legislation throughout the day in hopes of avoiding default on the national debt.

Senate leaders jump-started negotiations over a compromise bill to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling late Tuesday after House Republicans’ efforts to pass their own alternative crumbled in embarrassing fashion for GOP leaders.

"locking in" the sequester cuts.

I vaguely recall a time when government wasn't just the choice of the lesser of two evils. No handsprings here . . .

If the GOP wants to have another fight like this to kick of re-election season, I see a severe route in their future come November 2014.

3. This is a sad indictment of an out of touch political party.

Sad that one party is so determined to get their way, even after they lost the election badly, that they are willing to shut down the government and cost the taxpayers billions of dollars, and all for nothing. No one benefited by their antics, not one bit, they just made themselves look really stupid.

Very glad to see Obama hold firm in the face of the terrorists threats.

they will be back for more extorision in a few months.

A clean bill or no bill.

According to the latest deal:

It also would set up budget negotiations between the House and Senate for a long-term spending plan, and would include a provision to strengthen verification measures for people seeking government subsidies under Obama's signature health care reforms.

So the dems caved in, making obamacare harder to apply for, slowing it down so repugs can come back in a few months and finish it off.
