Ted Cruz Will Not Block Vote On Senate Deal

Source: MSNBC/Huffington Post

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Wednesday that he will not block a deal in the Senate to end the shutdown and avert default.

"Of course not, I never intended to delay this vote," Cruz told reporters. "The timing would not impact the outcome."

His comments came as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced they had to come to an agreement to open the government until Jan. 15, and extend the debt ceiling through Feb. 7.

We need that asshole to keep talking, for just another day. If just one Republican Senator throws a wrench in these works, the clock runs out, something weird and secret happens, and the President gets to shove his own plan straight down Congress' throat. That's what happened in 2011, and that is what I am hoping will happen now.

Why? Because Republican delay at this point guarantees that they get nothing and we get everything we want. Once the debt ceiling deadline hits, the President steps into the phone booth and emerges armed with a Fuhrer-level of emergency powers (graciously supplied to us by Congressional Republicans during the Bush years) including, apparently, the ability to compel Congress to do its job. Here's a brief summary of the crazy shit the President can do the moment he can declare a higher state of emergency:

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/sofa%20king/100

Note that through the All-Hazards Preparedness Act, the President can also enact a version of universal health care. On Friday fucking morning, if he wishes, as long as the Republicans play ball by continuing to be evil--not exactly a hard day's work for them.

I think it's possible that Democrats can pull a rabbit out of this hat procedurally, by having a Democratic Senator put an anonymous hold on consideration of the compromise bill until the deadline is reached. That would effectively guarantee that the Democrats are rewarded with a plan-of-government untainted by a single drop of Republican malevolence. If the anonymity of the hold can be maintained, Republicans will certainly be blamed for it.

So let's go, anonymous hold!

We need a constitutional amendment that requires both houses be run by rules of simple majority, allowing a signed petition of a majority to pass that petition as a bill.
