Obama, Boehner negotiations at standstill; focus moves to the Senate
Source: CNN
With many in the Senate, including both Republicans and Democrats, not happy with the House proposal to extend the debt limit but keep the government closed, a bipartisan group started working on their own plan.
Furthermore, some Senate Republicans also see their House colleagues as part of the problem.
There is growing concern being expressed in private meetings that the House GOP plan to extend the debt ceiling for six weeks would come back to haunt the party because it would expire close to the holidays, hurting retailers.
There also are worries about the impact of the partial shutdown dragging on, especially with polls showing the Republican Party getting the brunt of the blame.

I do think that MSM stories are misleading because they do not make clear that the House Republicans never offered to re-open the government, just to extend the debt ceiling for a very short time. Also, from a purely political, not economic, point of view I am starting to wonder whether the President should have accepted the House's proposal just to extend the debt ceiling. The government would still be closed, which people blame on Republicans. Worse, the next debt crisis would return just before the holidays. Republicans would widely be blamed as the Grinch who stole Christmas if they start pulling this ransom act again.
However, if you are thinking the good of the country, then inviting a debt ceiling crisis right before the holidays is a HORRIBLE idea. It almost makes you think that the Tea Party caucus has some sort of death wish for their party and the rest of the country.

(5,029 posts)The Tea Party Politicians are well placed deep cover Democratic party moles. The Dem's have been working on this for years if not decades. The Dem's successfully installed these guys to self destruct the GOP. Bill Clinton you are a genius, your legacy is coming to fruition.
On edit: Forgot the sarcasm thingy, just that it is the only reasonable theory I can up with.

(17,390 posts)...is absolutely idiotic. It is almost as if the President saved them from themselves by rejecting their offer, because it is so stupid that even Senate Republicans might have voted against it.
Hey, maybe we should save those Boehner as the Grinch gifs just in case the House gets its way with a debt crisis that triggers right before Black Friday.

(10,857 posts)Think back to what happened in 2011. Boehner played brinksman, and as soon as the economy was destabilized, some sort of national security provision kicked in which permitted the President to call in Congressional leadership to a closed meeting and send them out endorsing the President's own plan within 48 hours. The President (eventually) flensed a trillion dollars from the Department of Defense, and the Republicans did not get an extension of tax cuts for the rich, which killed them in the election the following year.
So this time the Republicans are offering to avoid the debt ceiling crisis, so that they can continue their shutdown stranglehold without the President being able to privately tell them that he's gonna shoot 'em if they don't sign on the line.
Conversely, Democrats have no reason whatsoever to give in. If they do nothing at all now, they win on Thursday night, and by "win," I mean that they get the best possible deal that they are going to get this year, because it's going to be the President's solution, which will give not a fuck about what Republicans want or care about, which is precisely what the United States needs.
By telling them to fuck off, we get this. The moment the problem becomes a crisis, we win and they get nothing at all.
So, I strongly suspect, we're going to wait and see what happens on Thursday.
