Google Ads Will Feature You
Source: Information Week
A change in the company's terms of service will put your name and picture in ads shown to your friends.
Google on Friday altered its Terms of Service to allow it to include users' Google+ profile names and pictures in Google products, including advertisements, reviews and other commercial offerings.
Google grants itself permission to do this by default, but allows users to opt-out of appearing in ads through its new Shared Endorsements in Ads setting. The company attempts to discourage users from revoking the permission it assumed they would grant by displaying this message when the checkbox is deselected: "Are you sure? When you disable this setting, your friends will be less likely to benefit from your recommendations."
The opt-out option is limited in scope, however: Google will still employ users' names and photos in Shared Endorsements related to reviews, +1, follows and other promotional services. You were expecting something for nothing?

I dislike the opt in by default but at least you are given the opportunity to opt out.

Posteritatis
(18,807 posts)When they're talking about pictures they mean specifically stuff that's posted rather than, say, emailed back and forth between individuals. An example would be a G+ user who had public photo albums. The contents of, say, your email inbox would still be sacrosanct.
Simply using Google for searching wouldn't do anything to you either. It applies to people who actually have a Google account.

(53,661 posts)For some reason, it ruined both yahoo and youtube accounts and they're unusable now. The yahoo account has pictures and data going back a decade. And now I can't get into either of them. But you've relieved my mind on that matter, I think.

(7,473 posts)I use Google as my home page. Don't remember registering for anything. Saw the banner at the top of my home page but did not pay attention, figured it was some kind of an ad.
Should I follow thru with this opt-out of which you speak? I don't have a picture anywhere that I can think of and certainly do not endorse anything.

(1,437 posts)Google has sent all Google+ members an email informing us that our likeness, etc., MAY be used, but the email also includes a link for us to opt out immediately if we don't want to be part of it.
This is just more hysteria over nothing.

It's unchecked here, on 2 accounts.

(22,109 posts)ETA Unless one has opted out previously, which not everyone has (as can be seen in my above link). Whatever the case, opting out has to have happened previously or done now to get out of it.
Simply put, the only way it could be 'opt in' is if you actually 'opt back in'.

(1,437 posts)The point is that Google fairly warns anyone who might be involved and gives them a clear and unambiguous path to opting out that takes a simple click.
The title makes it sound as if you don't have a choice. Which is misleading.
