Republicans Said to Insist on Conditions to End Shutdown

Source: Bloomberg

House Republicans offered a plan to raise the U.S. debt limit and end a partial government shutdown that would require the president to accept policy conditions attached to a spending measure, said two congressional aides.

Republicans sent a list of policy options to the White House following a meeting yesterday, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity. President Barack Obama has insisted that he won’t accept conditions for ending the shutdown, which is in its 11th day.

“There will be some matters that we’re discussing now that would be added to that, hopefully,” Representative Hal Rogers of Kentucky, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said in an interview today. “I hope there’s specific matters but that’s under discussion.”

House Republicans also want Obama to agree to a framework for future negotiations on long-term fiscal and health care policy. If that happens, the House could vote as soon as today on pushing the lapse of U.S. borrowing authority to Nov. 22 from Oct. 17, according to the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private offer.

No surprise. Republicans are still holding hostages and refusing to end the shutdown.

Good to have you with us! I know, we're all worried because it's rare to see Democrats exhibiting unity and lots of backbone. So what we all have to do is make sure they know we want them to stay that way. TOLL FREE Capitol Hill Switchboard numbers conveniently located in my sig line, below.

I've been around since 2001 and the Dubya Debacle, but when I lost my job in 2009 I also lost my user name and password and since then have mostly lurked.

You are correct when you say if they think we don't care, they won't either. I really feel most of Washington has completely lost touch with us regular folk and really don't want to be in touch. But that's a whole other can of worms.

Enjoy the continued tanking, guaranteeing massive Democratic victory, and no Democrats lose any of their Senate seats, but all 1/3 of the Republican's share is gone.

Only deal we will accept is a continuing CR close to Paul Ryan's budget, and debt ceiling extended towards the end of 2014. Or remove it entirely. Once that's done, Republicans have no more stroke, and will have to start conceding their garbage pork and massive cuts to the MIC and the oil&gas industry.

No. Imagine 24/7 cable news with snippets of crying children, frantic parents, retail workers and furloughed federal workers without Christmas funds. That's taking hostage of the holidays and the season that most businesses rely on to meet their annual bills...No. Just. No.

Open government...furloughed workers back to work. Then, the talks begin. They didn't come to 20 something budget meetings last year. No.

depend on the Christmas season to survive year to year. Most of those furloughed workers have other wise, Living Wage Jobs. Those families are among the people that spend money and lot of it, around Christmas time.

Christmas is time for my SO and my two daughters. Christmas for me are the bargains, both before and after Christmas. I tend to splurge then.
But still this is a sucky time, just before the holidays, for a prolonged shutdown. Lets hope enough people remember this for the next couple of elections cycles. Maybe then we can elect some more Alen Graysons and Elizabeth Warrens and break out of this Right wing and far Right wing loop we are in.

DON'T TAKE THE DEAL - JUST SAY NO TO THE TEAHADIST HOSTAGE TAKERS! Don't let them shred the social safety net for workers in exchange for doing their mother freaking job of running the government.

They still think you are a push-over and if you give in on this your term is ended and the fate of the Democratic party is sealed!

For every day that goes by, he could add something to assure a deal. For example, raise taxes on the 1% in increments of 25% per day. Then, defund congress. Then, cut the military budget in half.

Shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Glad you're here! You're spot-on. They PLANNED this. That's why, when the Democrats pushed, 19 TIMES, for meetings to start negotiating this past summer the assholes repeatedly said no. Because they wanted to run out the clock - as planned, and drag this country to the eleventh hour when THEY could get a "better deal."

DON'T CAVE, Mr. President!!! STAND FIRM, Democrats!!!! If you're even considering wavering, just go look at the polls. ALL of the polls. They're with OUR side this time!

The President and Senate Dems ought to start acting like cops. PBO ought to give the Republicans an offer they can't refuse: either they release the hostage and pass both a clean CR AND raise the debt ceiling for 2 years or face criminal charges of either seditious conspiracy, insurrection, advocating the overthrow of the government, or all of the above.

No one is pointing out that the GOP shutdown is a coup attempt, so to stop a coup, you have to lock up the coup plotters.

Attempts to negotiate or compromise has only emboldened them and led to further demands. They have now committed a figurative act of war, so the only proper response is to demand their unconditional surrender. If they are determined to drive over a cliff, don't give them a lifeline.
