First white enclave family moves to Leith [North Dakota]

LEITH, N.D. — The first family to begin turning the tiny Grant County town of Leith into an all-white supremacist enclave arrived during a blinding snowstorm.

Kynan and Deborah Dutton, formerly of Oregon, are living in the home owned by Craig Cobb, a hate crimes fugitive who plans to take over the city council when white nationalists represent a voting majority.

“I’m really proud. They are the first,” Cobb said. “We can make a lot of headway in changing the world if we have 17 people there (Leith).”

It won’t take many to change the town of Leith, population 24, the official count before the Duttons and their five children ages 4 through 11 arrived in a red mini-van Saturday, during the weekend’s heavy snow.

5. Leith is practically a ghost town as is

I was actually in Grant County a few days ago. It's a VERY remote place, even by North Dakota standards, with mostly empty roads as far as the eye can see. A lot of the towns in it like Raleigh (where I was) don't even feel like towns so much as collections of buildings thrown together on some unpaved dirt gravel roads. In fact it had a bit of a post-apocalyptic feel, there was a lot of buildings around, but most were clearly not in use, more cars than people who probably live there and the only sign of life I saw was a dog sitting on the back of a truck near an almost certainly unused lumber yard. Did I mention you can't even get cell service there?

That said it sounds like Grant County and the ND legislature have proposed an easy solution to this: Disincorporate Leith putting all of its land under the sole authority of Grant County, and then have the county condemn most of the unused buildings which probably should happen anyway. Then these little hate mongers are going to have build their own homes.

Much of Leith is actually on Google Street View if anyone wants to take a look. In Leith it appears the dirt gravel roads are the main ones. The side roads aren't even gravel roads, more like driven paths through grass. Seriously, just check it out. It's kind of surreal.

Chances are really good that these are "sovereign citizen" types, who recognise no authority but their own, administered from the barrel of a gun.

I certainly hope it doesn't come to this, but wait until, for example, a ND State Police officer pulls one of these over for a minor traffic offence and the nutcase driving the car decides to demonstrate to said police officer what they think of his authority...like I said, I hope it doesn't come down to that.

There are screwballs everywhere in the world, but I think we corner the market on the "toxic individualism" variety.
