COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio's minimum wage is going up 10 cents to $7.95 starting on Jan. 1.
The Ohio Department of Commerce on Thursday also said the new minimum for tipped employees will be $3.98 -- a 5-cent per hour increase.
The state minimum wage is adjusted annually because of a 2006 voter-approved amendment to the Ohio Constitution. Increases are linked to inflation. The minimum wage jumped 15 cents at the beginning of 2013.
The Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and clerical workers rose 1.5 percent during the period used to calculate wage increases.

(14,779 posts)In Ohio they passed a law connecting their minimum wage to the cost of living index. Thus the State Legislature does NOT have to pass an increase to reflect what inflation has reduced the minimum wage, the minimum wage holds its value in terms of inflation. Thus every year, the minimum wage will go up, as much as inflation had the previous year. With this law on the books, people who depend on Minimum wage in Ohio do no have to wait YEARS for Congress or their State Legislature to pass an increase in the minimum wage.

(14,779 posts)Over the years this $4 a week will go up every year. I remember the inflation of the 1970s, Unionized workers had cost of living adjustments in their contracts. Thus the inflation had little affect on them, it was the non-unionized employees that suffered under the inflation of the 1970s, this included a lot of upper middle class managers AND people on minimum wage. The cost of living adjustment was more important then any actual increase in wages, for without the cost of living adjustment inflation would eat up any price increase.
In many ways the first attack on workers income was the policy started under Reagan to replace Cost of Living Adjustments clauses with set wage increases. The Wage Increases NEVER exceeded the inflation rate so you had, in real terms, a pay cut of the unionized workers that switched from a Cost of Living Adjustment clauses to set pay increases. This cut in unionized wages, lead to cut in non-unionized wages and the problem we have had since Reagan of constant decline, in real terms, of wages of 90% of the population (9.9% seems to have held their own, the .1% has seen huge increase in income since Reagan).
The same may occur between a state with a high minimum wage but no cost of living adjustments, and a low minimum wage with a Cost of Living adjustment clause.
Sorry, I prefer Cost of Living Adjustments to one time pay increases when it comes to the Minimum Wages In the long term Cost of Living Adjustments will a produce more constant pay then one time pay increases, no matter how large the one time pay increase is. Thus in many ways Ohio's policy is superior to one time pay increases.

We went out one night to do something I forget, so we drove to the supposed place that was growing and thing's were happening and it was a mighty dud! It was a lonely drive out of there.
ick, just fuckin ick, I guess that's what happens when you let Republicans run things.

(4,742 posts)With all due respect...I'm sorry you traveled to some area of Ohio that was sub par. I have spent most of my life in the state and overall I love it. Every state has areas that suck. But if you spend a few minutes you can also find some wonderful things. Where do you live?

(6,323 posts)and we're shooting for $15 an hour.
Where people can discuss all things liberal, right down to our pot laws....which is arguably confusing at best.
I've read numerous articles about the rate of pay and If minimum wage were adjusted for inflation in today's dollars it would actually be between $20. and $25. dollars
say what you want but as soon as Clinton approved NAFTA it's all been down hill ever since.
So I guess what I'm saying is it's nothing personal.

(4,742 posts)Congratulations. Every state in the union has lower Minimum wage than Washington. Should it be that way? No of course not. But to single out Ohio for being so awful when it is actually one of the few states with higher than Federal minimum wage is kind of horseshit.
I've been to Washington numerous times and like most places I travel...it has its pros and cons also. Travel back to Ohio sometime and I'll give you a list of things to do or see.

(6,169 posts)I loved the land, especially the hills in the east, but the government there blows. Strange how all my family who left there are now liberals. The ones who stayed behind are now conservatives. Ohio has been sucked into the conservative disinformation bubble. So sad.

(15,540 posts)suburbs of Cleveland, so plenty of good liberals there, but the southern part of Ohio? Other than around the universities, it's redneck/uneducated country.
My liberal roots go back a long way.

(6,169 posts)But I had friends in your area. I hate to say exactly where I'm from since my home town has been somewhat infamous lately. Let's just say it's a bit south of Youngstown. It was big steel country in those days. It seemed to me that if you went much further south, you started getting into very conservative areas. Well, except Athens, of course.
I shouldn't generalize, I know. There are a lot of good liberals in Ohio, my 84 year-old mother being one, and one of the strongest liberals I know. It just seems that they are few and far between these days.

(533 posts)This is an automatic increase due to inflation, it is substandard, but for a nation that didn't raise min wage for decade, this is progress. I don't understand Ohio bashing here, or ever really. The lack of a living minimum wage is a problem through-out the nation.
We should work together as a united party on this issue, not insult each other. But since a couple narcassist have started the insults let me tell you this: I am proud and love the State of Ohio, I will never leave. I would love to know where some of the insult-posting bullies in this thread reside, so I can flame their locale using stereotypes and straw-men, because there is not a spot on Earth that can not be ridiculed, even though member of this thread don't seem to think so.
So please tell me?

ETA: Oh, I forgot to mention the "ready-fire-aim" effect too, a lot of posters will read just the headline and react to that, makes for some hilarious screwups sometimes.

(533 posts)But I am going to fight anyways. I just have this naive, idealistic idea that being a liberal means being free of the crap of America, including the thought that locale means something else. I think that stereotypes are to be adverted; that everyone is equal in quality, and should be valued by their individual talents and abilities.
So Don Quixote I will be.

(3,270 posts)With a 7.3% (adjusted) unemployment rate in Ohio.
With another 8,200 jobs lost from the state just in the month of August.
Ohio is now ranked second nationally for the number of jobs lost (behind Georgia).
I'm sure that $0.10 per hour is going to be a treat for the individual luck enough to have a job, which works a 12 hour shift, can now order one item off the fast-food dollar menu (after taxes are withheld).
The sad part about this is I'm certain that businesses will be threatening to leave Ohio because they "can't" afford to pay workers this much more.

(6,785 posts)70 cents an hour better than Alabama, which is at the Federal minimum.
That's about fourteen hundred bucks more a year on 40 hour weeks. That makes a lot of difference if you're making minimum wage.
Edited to add: It still oughta be $15 an hour Federal minimum, though.
