Votes are there to break shutdown, but not the will
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN) There appeared to be enough votes in the House on Tuesday to approve legislation to reopen the federal government, according to an ongoing CNN survey of House members.
All 200 Democrats and 17 Republicans support passing a continuing resolution with no additional legislative strings attached that would reopen the federal government, which has been partially closed for a week over a bitter policy dispute between Republicans and Democrats on health care. The number 217 is significant in that it is the minimum needed for the measure to win approval in the House.
CNN's vote count appears to bear out what President Barack Obama said on Monday.
"The truth of the matter is, there are enough Republican and Democratic votes in the House of Representatives right now to end this shutdown immediately with no partisan strings attached," Obama said.

Didn't the House Republicans used to run around demanding "an up or down vote" on issues they cared about?

(129,055 posts)and the CNN bullshit about the lack of "will" becomes moot because it will now be a REQUIREMENT that the bill be placed on the floor for a vote.

(27,315 posts)but Moderate Republicans have been voting REPEATEDLY against bringing the Senate bill to the floor. What makes you think they will change their mind and force the speaker's hand now?
So, yes, it is a question of will.
If the speaker brings it to the floor, it will pass, but he wont.

The suburban rethugs aren't teabaggers believe it or not. They are more like Christie rethugs, as are a bunch of the other "moderates" on the list.
If anything, the claim that "200 Democrats" were on board seems to be a better argument against it as this assertion is in contradiction to reports just yesterday about 5 blue dogs who weren't supporting a bunch of the Democratic efforts.
We shall see...!!

(94,585 posts)I think a number of Republicans will vote IF a vote is called, but won't risk their political future by individually calling for one.

(55,981 posts)Petition. When someone says "they have the votes", it isnt true until they have them committed on the Discharge Petition. The last I heard they had zero Republicans.

(4,106 posts)Republicans won't go along on a force petition with democrats. If the Speaker wants to bring it they will sign along with the dems. They stand behind the Speaker whatever he does. I'm afraid we're headed down to negotiating piece meals and entitlements again.
