Obama To John Boehner: Just Let Congress Vote
Source: HuffingtonPost
President Barack Obama challenged House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) Monday to prove that he didn't have the votes to pass a "clean" continuing resolution through the House of Representatives to end the government shutdown.
"If Republicans and Speaker Boehner are saying there are not enough votes, then they should prove it," he said in a speech at FEMA headquarters. "Let the bill go to the floor and lets see what happens. Just vote. Let every member of Congress vote their conscience and they can determine whether or not they want to shut the government down."
"My suspicion is, my very strong suspicion is, there are enough votes there, and the reason Speaker Boehner hasn't called a vote on it is because he doesn't apparently want to see the government shutdown end at the moment unless he's able to extract concessions that don't have anything to do with budget," Obama said.

(8,084 posts)How many times have we been told that Certain Repukes will vote one way, and then when the vote hits the floor
they vote straight down party lines every time
I want to see a clean CR vote but I don't see it happening
How about the President gets the Government going using the Supreme Court is that possible? I read it had to be two branches of Government it didn't say which two

(8,758 posts)If they have a vote on a clean CR, and there are enough votes for it to pass, then Republicans lose.
If they have a vote on a clean CR, and there aren't enough votes for it to pass, then Republicans lose. Why? Because the shutdown will continue and America will keep punishing them. Plus all the Republicans in not gerrymandered safe districts (Such as in NY, PA and CA -- where 15 of the 20 waffling R's come from) will be in for a world of hurt in 2014 and probably lose their jobs if they vote to keep the government shutdown.
Obama's a crafty cat, he knows he's got the House by the nads and he knows popular opinion is on his side.

(25,270 posts)Take the vote. If the vote passes for a clean CR - then Boehner can blame those Repugs that voted for it - to take the heat off of him. I believe he would be able - as a member of the House - to put his own vote in - he votes 'no' - but some of the other Repugs vote 'yes' - he can put the blame on them.
Just a thought.
But I think everyone knows that he knows that the votes are there for a clean CR. So this might not work for him.

(4,106 posts)Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Democrats could introduce legislation as soon as today that gives President Barack Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling unless two-thirds of Congress disapproves, according to a Senate Democratic aide.
A test vote on the proposal, described by the aide on condition of anonymity, could occur as soon as Oct. 11, just six days before federal borrowing authority is set to expire....
The method of giving Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling barring a congressional disapproval was first proposed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, in 2011 and became part of the Budget Control Act passed in August of that year...
The Senate Democratic aide said the strategy could make it easier to gain Republican votes because no Republican would have to vote directly for a debt-ceiling increase

(27,849 posts). There are a slew of "Impeach Boehner" petitions over at MoveOn.org
IMO, the best one is:
"Under the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution's Due Processes and Equal Protection Clauses, we hereby petition the United States House of Representatives,
the United States House Committee on Rules, and President Barack Obama to impeach the Speaker of the House of representatives, John A. Boehner, Republican, Ohio, for dereliction of duty in governance."
