(1,991 posts)The reports are suggesting that it was a high speed chase that started elsewhere and happened to enter the Capitol vicinity.
Waiting for more info before I place any blame on anyone, more likely someone trying to flee the police.

On MSNBC at capitaol right after shooting Bernie Sanders said he heard 5 shots in rapid succession. One person next to him said he heard someone shout "second Constitition". Bernie asked him "Really?" So far I guess I'm the only one in the US that heard this exchange. The person yelling might have been saying "2nd and Constitution".

(27,597 posts)WASHINGTON - October 3, 2013 (WPVI) -- A source told ABC News that a child was found in a car at the center of an incident at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday that sparked a lockdown.
The child was not injured. ABC News previously reported that a female suspect was dead at the scene.
It began with an attempt to ram the White House gates, ABC News reported. Then, according to ABC News, Secret Service pursued a suspect from the White House to the Capitol.

(4,106 posts)The Second Constitutional Convention of the United States is a controversial proposal made by a small but increasing group of scholars and activists from both left and right for a substantive effort to reform politics in the United States by means of overhauling the current United States Constitution. The current Constitution in Article V describes several ways in which the current constitution could be altered, but that in any event, 38 of the 50 states would be needed to ratify any changes. While in 2011, the number of voices calling for such a Constitutional Convention were small in number, there were reports of state legislatures leaning in the direction of substantive constitutional reform, based in part on widespread dissatisfaction with the American political process at the national level. In contrast, however, analyst David O. Stewart, writing in the Huffington Post, suggested that most Americans would "recoil from the disruption" of a possible second Constitution.

Again it comes down to the mindset of the officers - if she continue to pose a threat, deadly force was likely their only viable option, by police or anybody else threatened.
On the other hand, if her vehicle was disabled at that point and she was trying to surrender, deadly force by police is no less a crime than by anyone else.
Factors that will be relevant will include how quickly things unfolded/how much time to deliberate and act did the police have. Given her behavior, how reasonable would it be to infer the vehicle might have been packed with explosives that she could trigger?
My guess is that will be determined to be a police-justified shooting. To make that determination in either direction before the investigation would not be what I'd advise.

(2,750 posts)There was no damage but the broken driver side window. I assume that was from bullets
The Stranger
(11,297 posts)She had still not brandished a weapon of any kind and was being pursued by multiple officers.
Those are some tough facts on which to try to make a claim she posed a threat to the shooters.
polly7
(20,582 posts)This is all so sad. Yes, she was to blame for her actions as a driver endangering her child and anyone around her, but I can't believe she had any intention of setting out to hurt anyone. I just wish they'd been able to shoot out her tires or something earlier. Sad.
The Stranger
(11,297 posts)I'm questioning the use of deadly force. Couple that with the truly strange situation here, and I really want to know what was going on here.
The "isolated incident" lingo being repeated deserves to be pushed back against, especially given all of the strange revelations we have had recently regarding government and various individuals.
polly7
(20,582 posts)and I don't believe you or anyone here has condoned her actions at all. If she did have mental health issues as is now being reported and possibly panic led to her trying to flee, it's tragic ... and I would hope mental health would be something for news items to focus on instead of trying to turn it into just another wannabe killer statistic.
MikeW
(602 posts)She hit 6 other vehicles in a high speed chase + a law enforc. officer with her car.
She attempted to ram a barrier into a secure area where vehicles are not allowed.
Tragic. But thats the way it went down and it will be justified.
The Stranger
(11,297 posts)And if that is the case, having rammed vehicles minutes before would not constitute sufficient imminent threat to the shooters for them to shoot her later on while on foot. There was no weapon of any kind in her possession, much less one that would justify the use of deadly force.
You think it's justified. That's fine. You would get one vote.
I bet I could get a true bill on it.
She wasn't on foot she was shot behind the wheel of the vehicle.
