Poll: Americans not happy about shutdown; more blame GOP
Source: CBS News
On day three of the partial government shutdown, a new CBS News poll reveals that a large majority of Americans disapprove of the shutdown and more are blaming Republicans than President Obama and the Democrats for it.
Fully 72 percent of Americans disapprove of shutting down the federal government over differences on the Affordable Care Act; just 25 percent approve of this action. Republicans are divided: 48 percent approve, while 49 percent disapprove. Most tea party supporters approve of the government shutdown - 57 percent of them do. Disapproval of the shutdown is high among Democrats and independents. This CBS News poll was conducted after the partial government shutdown began on October 1.
<snip>
Republicans in Congress receive more of the blame for the shutdown: 44 percent of Americans blame them, while 35 percent put more blame on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. These views are virtually the same as they were last week before the shutdown, when Americans were asked who they would blame if a shutdown occurred.
When the government shut down back in November 1995, 51 percent of Americans blamed the Republicans in Congress, while 28 blamed President Bill Clinton.

Public opinion remains on the side of Democrats, although not as much so as in 1995.

(27,597 posts)That's down from 32% two years ago. This is most of those who can be counted on to blame Democrats no matter what.

(34,857 posts)I bet it was the same in 1995 - the numbers were probably closer early in the shutdown than toward the end.

(34,857 posts)Case in point: 2004 and 2012. The internet, while far more developed than in 1996 and 2000, wasn't at near the level as it would be eight years later. Because of that, it was far harder to combat the lies spread about John Kerry.

(7,403 posts)Is that the media still tended to report the news in 1995 so there was a whole lot less misinformation. The Republicans focus group test every message they put out and mostly that means putting out misinformation. Mitch McConnell was astonished to tell Rand Paul that the Democratic message behind closed doors was the same as the public message, unlike the Republican message.

(27,597 posts)Remember, most polls showed Romney and Obama were running neck and neck last year. But their results were inaccurate and it was by design that this was so. I guess I'm saying the same thing as you, just with a different perspective.

(22,670 posts)penned by rookie representative Mark Meadows. It spells out:
Therefore, we should continue our efforts to repeal ObamaCare in its entirety this year, next year, and until we are successful. However, in the meantime, there is more we can do in Congress.
Since much of the implementation of ObamaCare is a function of the discretionary appropriations process, including the operation of the mandatory spending portions of the law, and since most of the citizens we represent believe that ObamaCare should never go into effect, we urge you to affirmatively de-fun the implementation and enforcement of ObamaCare in any relevant appropriation bill brought to the House floor in the 113th Congress, including any continuing appropriations bill.
