Boehner Tells Republicans He Won’t Let the Nation Default.

Source: nyt

With a budget deal still elusive and a deadline approaching on raising the debt ceiling, Speaker John A. Boehner has told colleagues that he is determined to prevent a federal default and is willing to pass a measure through a combination of Republican and Democratic votes, according one House Republican.

The lawmaker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Mr. Boehner had said he would be willing to violate the so-called Hastert Rule if necessary to pass a debt-limit increase. The informal rule refers to a policy of not bringing to the floor any measure that does not have a majority of Republican votes.

Other Republicans also said Thursday that they got the sense that Mr. Boehner would do whatever was necessary to ensure that the country did not default on its debt.

Representative Michael G. Fitzpatrick, Republican of Pennsylvania, who was one of just 22 House Republicans this year who helped Mr. Boehner pass three crucial bills — to avert a fiscal showdown, to provide relief for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, and to pass the Violence Against Women Act — with a majority of Democratic support, said he expected that he may be asked to do so again.

“Hurricane Sandy, the fiscal cliff, all of the big votes require reasonable Republicans and Democrats to come together in order to pass it and get it to the president’s desk,” he said. “This will be no different.”

Take the Clean Senate CR.

Attach to it a Debt Ceiling Increase and NOTHING ELSE.

Waive the Hastert Rule. Send it to conference. I am sure the Senate and the President will be happy to take care of two things at once.

Do this now, rather than waiting until the eleventh hour of the 16th, to minimize damage to the US economy over the next two weeks.

Voila, Republicans can save face and claim they did the right thing, and got a "negotiation" with the Democrats. And the country can get back to business.

But oh, this would require responsible governance, and we can't have that from the Cruz Kamikaze Party.

They speak with fork tongue. Pass the clean cr and then start discussing the debt ceiling crisis. Let people go back to work, and parks to reopen, head start, cancer screenings, programs go on working. Destroying the American economy is destroying her people. Stop hurting and damaging them!

Please cease the burning down of America!

Fitzpatrick at the very least, appears to know his job.

I don't think Boner gives a flying fuck about legacy. He's on the Koch payroll with the rest of the GOP, and is doing their bidding.

I also don't believe these millionaires care about their salaries or constituents (unless they literally fear not being able to escape being tarred and feathered by them) or the rule of law.

They are extortionists of the Ayn Rand cult. They'd do just like her hero, Hickman, who got his ransom and then tossed the little girl's head out the car window as he drove away, laughing as the father who'd just paid him screamed in horror.

Sure, pretty severe thinking, but they're doing the same while separated from the crime by distance. People are going to die from this shutdown, more will die if either draw out the debt ceiling debate as Rand Paul suggests, torturing people, to get their suddenly sacred balanced budget, with the constant threat of default. They talk about money, and saving America, but what of those that suffer, are they not American?

Boner will be taken care of by his owners, with real estate and a kingly income for doing their bidding. I've talked to some who've seen him at his haunts, he's not suffering, he's living it up.

We know the ultrarich have no nation they believe in, they simply extrat wealth like Romney and Bain. They cannot be brought to task by countries as some of them have more money than they do.

But they are always ready, like vultures, to pick over road kill and hasten death if they can do so. They just can't wait for this country to collapse, they talk about it on the airways and make all their financial plans for that result.

Sorry for the language and imagery, but these guys both disgust and terrify so many. I know people who are already being hurt and am afraid for those who will be hurt.

And for what? So these psychopaths can laugh about it?

Ugh, I gotta leave this now.

Being third in line to the succession of the Presidency there is no way around this, equating this with Hurricanes, and natural disasters is very telling. At stake is survival of the United States and the Constitution. Do you think he might have received a phone call or two? The tantrum of the Republican crazies need to end, his speaker ship is not worth it. I really do hope some day there can be a book written that something rational survived in the Republican Party, right now it is not apparent.

That position can only be filled by a member of the House of Representatives. Sadly, Carnival Cruz is a Senator, with more clout than a Representative. But we are tired of this circus, and it's an easy error to make. The next Speaker will likely be Cantor, a major league psycho.

elected member of the House. It has never happened yet, but the House can choose a non member to be speaker if they want to.

While every speaker of the House has been a member of that chamber, the U.S. Constitution is actually not explicit that it has to be that way: "The House of Representatives shall chuse [sic] their Speaker and other Officers."

But that goes without saying, as we all know. In the rush of news events, we can hardly keep up.

The way MSM has virtually elected this shameless crittur POTUS, one would thing he's Superman.

He needs to be relegated to the trash bin of history. It's been a horror show.

Just talked with peeps at the doctor's office today about the GOPshutdown, debt ceiling and Obamacare.

They are enraged at the GOP and their attempt to make government does not work. So the word is getting out.

See you later.

He'll change his tone in a few days. He already probably has a script ready to go for just that occasion.

This is all a con game being played with the American people. They pretend to act like they're being reasonable, so they can later blame the other side for being unreasonable. In several days he'll be placing all the blame on the Democrats, and he'll point to this supposed willingness to save the country from default.

I'll believe it when I don't see it.
