Furloughed EPA Workers Opt For Public Service

Source: WUNC Radio

One of the largest EPA offices outside of Washington DC is in Research Triangle Park. That means some 2,000 employees are at home and not working during the government shut-down. But on Tuesday, a few dozen EPA workers could be found spending their un-wanted time off doing community service.

If you work for the Environmental Protection Agency it’s safe to say you like the environment. So it’s no surprise furloughed EPA workers are picking up trash, laying mulch and pruning small trees at Herndon Park near Southpoint in Durham....

Other EPA workdays planned for the rest of the week include yard work at the local Ronald McDonald House and fixing a pier at Falls Lake.

The article goes on to compare this shutdown to the one in 1995 when the EPA employees were also doing service work.

Audio at link if you prefer.

The EPA is one of the biggest employers in RTP, so it's good to see them getting out.

who are being penalized by a group of do-nothing, self-absorbed, self-centered, greedy a**h****. Yet here these men and women are, doing good deeds.

If the Republicans could feel shame, they should be overcome with it... but these idiots don't know the meaning of the word.

a couple of times, but never got in unfortunately. But these are good hard-working folks who don't deserve to be treated this way by the spoilt children the repubs have become.

they think people on unemployment don't want to work. Yeah if I don't work I get depressed and thats exactly what the fuck happened. No jobs in late 2008 after being laid off obviously no jobs in 2009 and by 2010 I'd given up

although technically I still do odd jobs around and keep my computer skills intact. and write comments here just to keep up with typing. So it's in my interest to do this.
