GOP states offer little help on buying insurance
Source: Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) On the day consumers start perusing newly launched federal online health exchanges, Republican governors who oppose President Barack Obama's insurance overhaul are mostly sitting on their hands. But the law is going into effect without them.
Thirty-six states, most of them Republican-controlled, have opted to let the federal government run the exchanges where consumers can shop for individual policies from private insurance firms.
Consumers are getting their first opportunity on Tuesday to buy policies on the exchanges, even as the law remains at the core of congressional budget gridlock that has caused a partial federal government shutdown. The exchanges' funding isn't affected by the shutdown.
A spokesman for Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal dismissed the sweeping law as "a federal issue" and said his boss had no plans to discuss the launch of the exchanges.

(74 posts)Too busy trying to "Deal" with your many ethical problems to lend a hand to the huge numbers of uninsured Georgians! Shame.

(12,165 posts)It makes me sick that millions more in Georgia could have affordable care, but my state has chosen to deny the medicaid expansion, which would benefit the most vulnerable in our state.
Our insurance commissioner is in the news for saying that he's actively trying to thwart the ACA, and his office will not help anyone calling about what's available on the exchange.
It's craven evil.

(6,785 posts)Could you imagine how badly my state (Alabama) would fuck this up? Pretty much anything in our state meant to help the poor or unemployed is a byzantine nightmare designed specifically to allow as many shitheads as humanly possible access to shame the applicant out of it.
I doubt the Federal exchanges will be perfect, but at least they won't be actively malicious.

(1,301 posts)That's the irony here. Most of the reddest states, by letting the Feds handle it, are actually helping us lay the groundwork for a more progressive system at some point in the future!
