Head Start Preschoolers Told To Stay Home Due To Gov't Shutdown

Source: TPM

ZOE SCHLANGER – OCTOBER 1, 2013, 3:42 PM EDT

Head Start preschoolers in eastern Alabama were told to stay home Tuesday and 240 employees were furloughed without pay after the U.S. government shut down for the first time in 17 years, MSNBC.com reported.

Though the preschool program for low-income families is operated locally, it relies in large part on federal grants awarded each year. For 23 Head Start programs in 11 states that service a combined 19,000 children, grant money rant out on Sept. 30, according to MSNBC.com. Some programs have alternative revenue sources and will remain open, but others will not. MSNBC.com notes that 770 preschoolers throughout the Cheaha region were told to stay home.

Automatic budget cuts known as sequestration cut $405 million out of Head Start funding in March. As a result, 57,000 children were dropped from the program nationwide

I hope they will have to look those parents in the eye and have to explain to them that the GOP cares more about it's rich campaign contributors than about the welfare those poor parents children. FUCK THE GOP

Those parents will never have the opportunity to confront their GOP congressman in person.

Sad, but that's the way this place works now.

Republicans said "fuck you" to the most vulnerable, to the children. When they want to attack womens rights they use "children"as a weapon. When it comes to their responsibilities they forget or don't care about anything but their donors.
Sorry kids, you don't deserve to be treated like this.

I don't think they could do more damage running the House than the current group of babies there.

they have as long as I can remember decried HeadStart as a taxpayer funded babysitting program so that "welfare" queens can enjoy the day sitting around their luxury homes smoking crack without any kids around to spoil the fun

The draconian measures requiring parents to " work", as though parenting isn't the hardest work imaginable!!! mean that they have to be at work or they lose their support, or capacity to pay rent, etc. What a nightmare these treasonous poor excuses for humans have caused! For young and old alike !

I know that nobody's saying it, but with all the disruption this is causing in people's lives, some people will actually die. Kids left alone, those furloughed from jobs, those who are working without pay, seniors who are without services they depend on. Nothing good can possibly come of this and countless people will be hurt, many we'll never even hear about.
