New Jersey Judge: State Must Allow Gay Couples To Marry

Source: TPM

ASSOCIATED PRESS – SEPTEMBER 27, 2013, 2:50 PM EDT

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- A New Jersey judge has ruled that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry.

Judge Mary Jacobson says now that the federal government recognizes gay marriages, not doing so in New Jersey would violate the state constitution.

It's not immediately clear when marriages could begin or whether the state government will appeal to a higher-level state court.

Gov. Chris Christie is opposed to gay marriage, and his administration is expected to appeal.

Several counties in NM are issuing licenses. The state supreme court is considering making it statewide. It's been met with a yawn here, even the priests and preachers have been pretty low key about it.

All it took were a couple of states legalizing it and finding out that the sky didn't fall, after all.

Christie indicates he will appeal gay marriage ruling

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A spokesman for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said on Friday the state's Supreme Court should make the "constitutional determination" regarding gay marriage's legality, after a state judge ordered officials to begin allowing same-sex couples to marry starting October 21.

The response indicated that the state will appeal the ruling from Judge Mary Jacobson in Mercer County Superior Court in Trenton.
