Governor signs bill hiking California minimum wage

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Calling it a "matter of justice," Gov. Jerry Brown put his signature on a bill that will hike California's minimum wage to $10 an hour within three years, making it one of the highest rates in the nation.

The legislation signed Wednesday at a ceremony in downtown Los Angeles will gradually raise the current minimum of $8 an hour to $9 on July 1, 2014, then to $10 on Jan. 1, 2016.

The increase is the first to the state's minimum wage in six years and comes amid a national debate over whether it's fair to pay fast-food workers, retail clerks and others wages so low that they often have to work second or third jobs.

Brown called the bill an overdue piece of legislation that will help working-class families and close the gap between "workers at the bottom and those who occupy the commanding heights of the economy."

Too bad he's too old to make another run for president. The country could use some of his political savvy.

that this man was never president. He has done an unbelievable job in a few short years to clean up the mess in California that Republican governors created.

We're now heading for a budget surplus. We'll never elect another Republican in this State again. Arnold was a aberration. IMO, 10$ still isn't enough, especially for those living in the Bay Area.

One of the most progressive current governors in the country right now, way better than corporate Democrats Cuomo and Malloy, especially on education. He's certainly the only one fighting Race to the Top and the education "reform" movement.

..and F-up what Jerry fixed.

Its the electorate (Beverly Hills, Bel-Aire, Orange County, etc) that needs a massive ennma before that election day comes.

The GOP is dying here. There's no one even on the horizon for the Republicans while the Democrats' bench is fairly deep. Now, if the old fossils (are you listening, DiFi?) will just get out of the way for new blood, there's no reason California can't continue to dig out of the hole the Republicans (and the stupid people who voted for "The Governator&quot put us in.

May be that with only Democrats getting elected, some candidates will attract voters with the same policies the GOP held previously. Same result from a different brand.

Beverly Hills is a liberal enclave not just of liberal voters, but a big source of funding for liberal candidates and ideas.

Orange County has a Democratic Party that is almost at parity with the Republicans.

Many of your worst Republicans are now residents of Kootenai County, Idaho, which is now the most Republican county in the United States.

It should be on the 2014 ballot, increase to $10.00 in Jan. 2015, then $11.00 in 2016 with automatic increases for inflation thereafter.

It should be brought up to a point where it equates with living standards some thirty years ago pre gonzo goes to bitburg. It won't break the nation and if anything will lead to a boom in GDP ......try it ...the worst that can happen is we'll have people who as a whole will afford to live a decent life ....even the rich will do ok but then that's a given....
