UPDATED: Modoc County joins Siskiyou in state of Jefferson bid for secession

Source: Redding Record Searchlight

The Modoc County Board of Supervisors today voted to join neighboring Siskiyou County in its bid to secede from the State of California.

Board Chairman Geri Byrne said a measure to join the push to form a State of Jefferson was approved by a vote of 4-0, with one supervisor absent.

“I put the measure on the agenda because I heard from a number of people in my district that wanted to do such,” Byrne said. “We’re not saying we’re seceding today, we’re saying let’s look into it.”

Roughly 40 people turned out for the board meeting, Byrne said a standing-room only crowd in the Modoc County chambers. About a dozen spoke in favor of the measure with only two raising objections.

What I'd really like to do with these right-wing crybabies, here and in Colorado, is let them secede from the state, but not accept them into the union.

Then we can see how they like it when they not only do NOT get to send more baggers to Washington, but when they also have to show a passport on their way to the grocery store!

before entering the border. And the visa is limited to 5 times per quarter. Costs about $1,500,000 fake state dollars (10 bucks) - which nobody in the fake states will ever have.

You don't need one to travel to any other state in this country. Not even Texas.

I'm sure California would not be happy having to lease it from the Jeffersonians.

...they can't have that shit for free, just because they have entitlement issues!

How bout $500 per acre, which is about half what people are selling land for in Modoc County right now? Assuming around 10,550 sq miles in those two counties (based on a quick glance at Wikipedia), that would come to about $3.4 billion just for start-up costs, before we even get to negotiating deals on water resources, infrastructure, etc. I suspect those fuckers might not like what their tax bills look like, given how small the tax base is!

But the last thing we need is a new state that would automatically elect an all Republican congressional delegation and deliver its electoral votes to the Republicans. So we need to oppose this. Of course it will never happen anyway.

First, we fought a war a while back with a portion of the country that wanted to secede. They lost, we won. Second, as has been pointed out, if they were allowed to secede from California (which is part of the union), they would no longer be part of the union, thus would be some sort of independent country and would not be entitled to either Senators or Representatives in the Congress of the union. At that point, assuming that the US even recognized them as a legitimate country, there would need to be a period of negotiation over things like passports, trade, tariffs, immigration, etc. Of course all federal employees in this new area would instantly lose their jobs - employees such as FBI, Treasury agents, federal judges, etc.

People never, ever, seem to think what seceding would actually mean. They never think of the consequences. Idiots.

California and forming another state. There have been similar moves in other states such as Colorado. They are not trying to secede from the county. This would be constitutional, however the Constitution requires approval from both the state legislature and the U.S. Congress. There are precedents for this. Maine was formed by seceding from Massachusetts and West Virginia was formed by seceding from Virginia.

There has also been discussion in Texas and Arizona about seceding from the United Sates, but that's another matter and it's constitutionality is questionable.

The local newspaper ran a contest to name the new state and the winning entry was Jefferson. The winner of the contest pocketed $2 for his efforts. Yreka was designated the temporary state capital where the ‘State of Jefferson Citizen’s Committee’ was formed.

They proceeded to stop traffic on Highway 99 outside of town and handed their ‘Proclamation of Independence’ out to travelers.

On December 4, Judge John L. Childs of Crescent City in Del Norte County was elected governor. A torchlight parade complete with horses, marching bands and sign-carrying young people riding in trucks was held in Yreka followed by a ceremonious inauguration held on the courthouse lawn.

The newsreels were to air nationally the week of December 8, but tragically on December 7th Pearl Harbor was bombed and the State of Jefferson rebellion of 1941 came to an end.
