Kerry says support for action against Syria is growing

Source: BBC

US Secretary of State John Kerry has said the number of states ready to take military action against Syria's government is in the "double digits".

Speaking in Paris, he said the world could not be "silent spectators to slaughter" after Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons against its civilians.

The US accuses President Bashar al-Assad's forces of killing 1,429 people in a gas attack on 21 August.

EU foreign ministers say there should be no action before a UN report.

Or maybe I missed some sarcasm? Obama World is currently crazier than the Mad Hatter's Tea Party!

I'm thinking Saudi Arabia, Israel and some "giants" from the old US coalition of the billing: Eritrea, El Salvador, Romania, Latvia, etc.

and I think the list of countries was published late that day. I can't link using the tablet - don't know how to. Search 11 nations support US and you'll find links.

Its only moral support anyway - no military.

A statement signed by 11 of the G20 nations said they hold Syrian President Bashar al Assad responsible for the alleged chemical attack.

The joint statement issued by Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the US condemned the "horrific" attack in Damascus and called for a "strong international response", but it did not specify military action.

Its actually 10 in support + the USA which makes 11.

Goodnight.

... "There are a number of countries, in the double digits, who are prepared to take military action," Mr Kerry said...

Of the 11 countries you refer to, dipsydoodle, only 3, the US, France and Turkey say they are prepared themselves to take military action.

The others, including most notoriously the UK, are not.

The document signed after the G20 meeting could be interpreted, in certain circumstances (such as waiting for the UN to pronounce), as expressing these 11 countries' support for a limited US military or other form of intervention (although the text says 'international' which ought to mean UN: anything else would be illegal), which is not what Kerry is quoted as having said.

The Leaders and Representatives of Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America made the following statement on the margins of the Group of 20 Nations Leader’s Meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia: ...

... We call for a strong international response to this grave violation of the world’s rules and conscience that will send a clear message that this kind of atrocity can never be repeated. Those who perpetrated these crimes must be held accountable...

I resent this black-and-white over-simplification that Kerry is using. We either have to bomb the country, or we're just "silent" about it, and by implication, complicit in it.

I've said it already today, but I'll say it again: if there are 10 or more countries "ready to take military action against Syria's government", then the United States can sit this one out.

Why do you say there is no need for military action. If it comes to limited strategic targets strikes(against arms etc) would you be heartened about doing something about Assad atrocities?
I don't advocate such actions, rather something that the United Nations could handle.
