Girl shot at Bremerton elementary school (Washington)

BREMERTON, Wash. – A third grade girl has been shot at Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton.

A teacher working in the office said the girl was shot in a classroom around 1:30 p.m.

There are unconfirmed reports that the shooter was another student and that the student is now in custody and a gun was recovered.

Police have not confirmed the girl's condition, but an Airlift Northwest Helicopter landed at nearby Harrison Hospital to take her to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The school was placed under lockdown. Children could be seen escorted out of the building about a half-hour after the shooting.

This is a developing story and we will post more information as it comes in.

the local networks have pre-empted schedules to give the coverage of this. What they are saying is that not much is known, aside from the fact that a nine-year old boy walked up to an eight-year old girl (both third-graders), as teachers were preparing to dismiss classes for the day, stuck a gun into the little girl's abdomen and fired.

Just now, networks finally returned to regular programming, after more than an hour of reporting the breaking news.

Our local channels were rather slow to move beyond just breaking news and actually add the story with a linkable article, due to the swirl of questions around facts of the incident. As it was, some of the networks even fell into the trap of wild speculation and mistakenly reported supposedly "eye-witness" accounts, which have now proven to be false.

I'm just glad that the little girl has survived the shooting and the kid with the gun is now being held accountable!

Police say a student brought a gun to school and it discharged while in his backpack. The bullet went through the bag and injuring third-grader Amina Bowman.

Sources tell KING 5 that Bowman was shot once perhaps in the arm and the bullet continued into her side missing all the vital organs.

Bowman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where she underwent surgery just minutes after arriving. She made it through exploratory surgery fine but faces additional surgeries, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said. She is in critical condition, but friends and family gave a 'thumbs up' signal to reporters as they left the hospital late Wednesday...

The student who brought the gun has been taken into custody and booked into the Kitsap County Juvenile Detention Center for unlawful possession of a firearm, bringing a dangerous weapon onto school grounds and assault in the 3rd degree.

Police are still investigating how the 9-year-old student got a hold of the gun.

...taking one of my kids to school for the first time...kindergarten or grade 1, and there was that big bold sign on the wall of an elementary school "Gun Free Zone" ....and I paused, and thought, "What the fuck? These people need a sign on an elementary school wall to tell them NOT to bring guns to school?"
Truly, it was a headshaker at the time, and frankly to this day, reamins that way.

Sometimes I wonder if this country has gotten so trigger happy that self-defense shooting is now an essential life skill akin to cooking or driving.
