Russia says ballistic 'objects' fired in Mediterranean

Tue Sep 3, 2013 5:05am EDT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian radar detected two ballistic "objects" that were fired towards the eastern Mediterranean from the central part of the sea on Tuesday, state-run news agency RIA quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.

The Defense Ministry declined immediate comment to Reuters. A ministry official had earlier criticized the United States for deploying warships in the Mediterranean close to Syria.

Russia’s missile tracking system detected the launch of two ballistic rockets in the central Mediterranean, state-run RIA Novosti reported, citing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The missile trajectory suggested the rockets were headed toward targets in the eastern Mediterranean, Shoigu was cited as telling President Vladimir Putin today, according to RIA. The launch was detected by Russia’s radar station in Armavir at 10:16 a.m. Moscow time, according to the news service.

No one at the Defense Ministry picked up the phone when Bloomberg called. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s spokeswoman, Natalya Timakova, told reporters near Moscow that Shoigu met Putin to inform him of the missile launch. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, declined to comment.

usually applies to projectiles arcing according to velocity, direction, and gravity. Not a powered, guided thing like a cruise missile or drone. More like an artillery shell. I wonder what they saw, or thought they saw.

If (When) the military launches its strike against Assad, I don't think we'll need some little blip on a radar screen, it'll be shock&awe with a lot of woohoo's on Fox.

Russia on Tuesday announced that its missile early warning system had detected the launch of two missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea fired towards the Sea's eastern coastline.

The launches took place at 10:16 am Moscow time (0616 GMT) and were detected by the early warning system in Armavir in southern Russia, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies.

It said Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had already reported to President Vladimir Putin about the event, which comes amid growing expectations of Western military action in Syria.

How Israel Spoofed Syria’s Air Defense System

U.S. aerospace industry and retired military officials indicated today that a technology like the U.S.-developed “Suter” airborne network attack system developed by BAE Systems and integrated into U.S. unmanned aircraft by L-3 Communications was used by the Israelis. The system has been used or at least tested operationally in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last year.

The technology allows users to invade communications networks, see what enemy sensors see and even take over as systems administrator so sensors can be manipulated into positions so that approaching aircraft can’t be seen, they say. The process involves locating enemy emitters with great precision and then directing data streams into them that can include false targets and misleading messages algorithms that allow a number of activities including control.

Russia reports detection of missile launch forcing Israel to admit it tested Anchor target missile together with US; test declared a success

Shortly after Russia announced it detected the launch of two ballistic missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean, Israel's Defense Ministry issued a statement saying it successfully tested an Anchor target missile.

The missile is part of Israel's Hetz anti-missile system. The test was carried out with the US Missile Defense Agency.

Russia's report said the launch was detected at 9:16 am Israel time while the Defense Ministry statement said the test took place at 9:15 am. It was further stated that the test was successful and was conducted in the Mediterranean from Air Force field in central Israel.

Also Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned against attacking the State of Israel. "The reality around us is changing. I want to say to anyone who wants to harm us – it is not advisable."

25. Now summarised : Russia raises alarm over Israeli missile test in Mediterranean

Sep 2013

(Reuters) - Russia raised the alarm on Tuesday after detecting the launch of two ballistic "objects" in the Mediterranean Sea but Israel later said it had carried out a joint missile test with the United States.

There were no reports of missile strikes on Syria. Syrian state sources said the missiles had fallen harmlessly into the sea and there were no explosions in the capital Damascus, Russian news agencies reported.

Initial reports of the launch by Russian news agencies had ruffled financial markets because the United States is preparing for a possible military strike on Syria over what it says was a chemical weapons attack by government forces in their conflict with rebels trying to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

But the Israeli Defence Ministry said it had tested a missile used as a target in a U.S.-funded anti-missile system at 9:15 a.m (0615 GMT), about the same time as the Russian radar picked up the launch.

Nothing changes the fact that actual origin of the news was RIA Novosti / RT which only goes to confirm that not everything they publish is spun rubbish.

Sep 2013

Israel has announced that it carried out a test of an anti-missile system, shortly after Russia announced that its defence systems detected the launch of two missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea towards the eastern coastline.

The Israeli army said it was "not familiar" with any missiles being fired in the Mediterranean, while saying that the missile that was tested - an Arrow 2 BMD system - is part of the Israel Hetz anti-missile system, a joint US-Israeli project.

Israel Hetz is used for defence against ballistic-missile attacks while the Iron Dome system is for defence against low-altitude rocket attacks.

Israeli media reports said the missiles was directed from bases in the Mediterranean and in the centre of Israel at 9:15am (06:15 GMT), around the same time cited by Russian state-run news agency RIA.

Last week Netanyahu authorised the call-up of a limited number of army reservists in the expectation that the US could launch strikes over the weekend. Thousands of Israelis flocked to distribution depots to collect gas masks.

in the Med as a consequence of potential upcoming operations with France, the fact that Syria is on the table, and Egypt is simmering, I can assure you we are coordinating very closely and continuously with Israel.

After all, it isn't impossible to speculate that some third or fourth actor might take the opportunity, while everyone is focused on Syria, to try to to pull some shit with them and hope to set off an imbroglio. Or that someone would "spoof" in order to get them to retaliate against the wrong nation.

If Israel is testing anything, it's with the full knowledge/understanding of USA, France, etc. They'd have to be lumped with 'the west' for the purposes of my example.

I do take your point about Netanyahu but active duty Israeli military officers take a more nuanced view than he does--they, even if he thinks otherwise, realize that war isn't a picnic and they have a limited number of personnel assets to fight one. They're not going to jerk chains unnecessarily and I suspect their senior leadership would push back HARD if he tried to play games like that in this environment.

37. Israel claims joint US missile launch in Mediterranean for 'target practice'
Tue Sep 3, 2013, 10:02 AM
Sep 2013
Israel says it carried out a “joint” US missile launch in the Mediterranean, having earlier claimed ignorance. Russian radars detected two ballistic rockets fired in the region on Tuesday, sparking widespread speculation over who was behind the launch.

A spokesperson for the Israeli army confirmed that a launch of a missile had been carried out 9:15am local time (06:15 GMT), adding that US forces in the Mediterranean had been given prior warning of the drill.

A fighter jet launched the ‘anchor’ missile as part of a drill to test a missile defense system. However, earlier, when the Russian government announced it had detected the firing of two ballistic objects in the area, Israel insisted it had no “information on this issue yet.”

Despite Israeli claims of a “joint US” missile launch, the American Navy maintained that no rockets were launched by US forces in the region.
