Farr says no to attacking Syria

WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Sam Farr will oppose President Barack Obama's call to attack Syria when lawmakers return to Capitol Hill a week from Labor Day.
The Carmel Democrat announced his no vote Saturday, hours after Obama said the U.S. should launch a limited military strike to punish the Syrian government for an Aug. 21 chemical-weapons attack against its own citizens.
Obama said he would not act before Congress has had a chance to debate and discuss his plan.

"It is time to ask the international community to assume its responsibilities and to take deterrent measures" against the Syrian regime, he added.
Note, he says "international community" should act, NOT the USA.

Arab states must echo demands by the "legitimate" representatives of the Syrian people for "help from the international community to put an end to the bloodbath" in Syria, he said, referring to the opposition.
The Saudi foreign minister did not explicitly mention a call by US President Barack Obama to launch punitive strikes on Syria for allegedly unleashing chemical weapons on its citizens last month, which according to Washington includes Sarin gas and killed hundreds.
But he told a news conference in Cairo that the international community must stop "the aggression against the Syrian people before these people perish." ...........

On the prospect of a US strike, he said: "We stand by the will of the Syrian people. They know best their interests, so whatever they accept, we accept, and whatever they refuse, we refuse."
The Arab League meeting was expected formally to blame Assad for the gas attack.
Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba, reporting from Cairo, said that Ahmed Aljarba, the head of the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC), would give a speech at the meeting of foreign ministers. .........

(16,079 posts)Between all of the members of the Arab League there is more then enough military personnel and equipment to defeat and arrest Assad and his generals.
Iraq and Jordan share a border with Syria...which makes it easy for all of the Gulf members to reach Syria!
I think it's time for the Gulf State members of the Arab League to step up and use their own resources to remove one of their suspended member states!

Peace Corps service
Farr joined the Peace Corps in 1964 and served for two years as a volunteer in Colombia. He spent his time in a poor barrio near Medellin, teaching community development skills.[3]
While he was serving in Colombia, Farrs mother died from cancer. Following her death, his father visited with Farrs sisters. While riding horses, one of his sisters (Nancy), was thrown and hit her head. She died on the operating table in a Colombian hospital.[citation needed]
Since his Peace Corps service ended, Farr has visited Colombia several times. He took his wife for their honeymoon and has returned several other times for both personal and official business. During a trip in 2007, Farr spoke in front of the Colombian Congress and was awarded the Orden del Congreso de Colombia.[4]

(25,183 posts)I've been reading about Repuke opposition to a Syria action for the last several days. This is the first Democratic congresscritter I've seen stand up in opposition to this, and other than a few weasels who are all for it (like my congresscritter, Eliot Engel) I've heard mostly the sounds of crickets from the people who thundered against the Iraq war.
It would be nice if they'd use the next week to step up to the mike and announce that the President's going to have to do it over their opposition.
