Western journalists 'killed in Homs shelling'

Two Western journalists have been killed in the Syrian city of Homs when shells hit the building they were staying in, opposition activists say.

France named them as Marie Colvin, an American Sunday Times reporter, and Remi Ochlik, a French photographer.

Several other people were reportedly killed when the shell hit the makeshift media centre in the Baba Amr area.

More than 100 people were reportedly killed across the country on Tuesday, including more than 40 in Homs as troops attacked opposition strongholds.

Marie Colvin

Colvin has done some fine reporting from the Middle East, and she has spoken before of the dangers journalists face in covering conflicts.

An amazing life. In 2001 she became the first Western journalist in many years to gain access Tamil Tiger strongholds in northern Sri Lanka. She lost her left eye in an attack.
In East Timor in 1999 she was credited with helping save the lives of 1,500 refugees stranded in a United Nations compound in Dili which was under siege by the Indonesian army in the wake of a referendum that chose independence from Jakarta’s rule.
