Western journalists 'killed in Homs shelling'
Two Western journalists have been killed in the Syrian city of Homs when shells hit the building they were staying in, opposition activists say.
France named them as Marie Colvin, an American Sunday Times reporter, and Remi Ochlik, a French photographer.
Several other people were reportedly killed when the shell hit the makeshift media centre in the Baba Amr area.
More than 100 people were reportedly killed across the country on Tuesday, including more than 40 in Homs as troops attacked opposition strongholds.

(Reuters) - Two Western journalists were killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs on Wednesday when shells hit the house they were staying in, opposition activists and witnesses said.
They were named as Marie Colvin, an American working for the Sunday Times newspaper, and French photographer Remi Ochlik.
A witness told Reuters by phone that shells hit the house where the journalists were staying and a rocket hit them as they were escaping.

Colvin has done some fine reporting from the Middle East, and she has spoken before of the dangers journalists face in covering conflicts.

(8,694 posts)An amazing life. In 2001 she became the first Western journalist in many years to gain access Tamil Tiger strongholds in northern Sri Lanka. She lost her left eye in an attack.
In East Timor in 1999 she was credited with helping save the lives of 1,500 refugees stranded in a United Nations compound in Dili which was under siege by the Indonesian army in the wake of a referendum that chose independence from Jakartas rule.
