Anthony Weiner Says Comments About Wife's Role With Hillary Clinton Were 'A Joke'

Source: Huffington Post

NEW YORK -- New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner said Tuesday that comments he made a day earlier about his wife Huma Abedin's role with Hillary Clinton's expected presidential run in 2016 were "a joke."

Buzzfeed's Ben Smith asked Weiner in an interview on Monday if he knows about Abedin's plans with Clinton in 2016. Abedin was a close aide to Clinton at the State Department. "I do," Weiner replied in the barroom interview. "But I'm not telling you."

That interaction was interpreted by some as a sign that Clinton was indeed mounting a presidential campaign and prompted a Clinton spokesman to deny knowledge of what Weiner was talking about.

Weiner, a Democrat running a faltering campaign for New York City mayor, was asked about the remarks after a debate on Tuesday night.

He should have enough sense to know not to say something like that, so it was pretty disappointing.

Overall, I just don't know what his deal is. I really don't. I can think of some amazing moments where he's stood up in congress and done some really good things, said some really hard to say, but needed things that had to be said when no one else would say it... but overall...

I just can't figure him out, and I cannot account for whether he's a net benefit or detriment to the party, specifically related to other candidates' races.

Near as I can tell, he's always been "the mouth that roared." He loves to run his mouth about ideas, but what legislation has he pushed through that made a difference?

He's a great talker, he can get people fired up, he can snark at a wingnut on Faux News, but I can't name anything he's actually done.

Anyone? What am I missing? What legislative initiatives have the Weiner stamp all over them? What work has he done?

As for his "benefit to the party," he has none. He needs to get out of public life, soon. Now is better than later.

He's professionally reckless. That's why he'll say the things we love on the senate floor, and also explains some of his flaws. He just has no restraint at all.

guy has a beautiful wife, a new child and looks like he lives a comfortable life. why is he doing the sex thing on the internet, for that matter why do it anywhere.

I think some man just look at women as sex objects and forget they are real people. if he ever got to know any of those women in real life, he would find that they are not going to talk about sex all day long. they are going to have the same everyday problems his wife or female family members have that he seems to find so boring.

It's just dumb to me.

"It was a JOKE." Yeah. Sure. Takes one to know one, I guess.

Dammit, this is such a disappointment! I used to like him! Thought he was a real liberal firebrand. LOVED his aggressive oratory in the House of Reps. LOVED him smart-assing the bad guys. Really told 'em! When he AND Alan Grayson would thunder away on the House floor, it was utterly delicious! Finally some of ours are standing up and giving shit to the hugely-deserving assholes on the other team! But he's just shown himself to be a real jerk. Yet again! A narcissistic jerk. Repeatedly! When he resigned Congress there was a little part of me that was sorry to see him go - sorry to lose that voice in Congress. MAN do I feel differently! Now I hope he just stays AWAY. I feel for his wife! Don't see how he can win, unless New Yorkers are masochistic. I'm sure the Clintons are hoping he goes away - that the New York City voters will put him out of all our misery!

Just made me think of John Edwards. Particularly painful because he was the only guy talking about the Two Americas - one of them being the very poor. Only guy in the preliminaries who made that a major issue in his campaign. And HE turns out to be a selfish jerk, too.

I've had it with "private interpretations" that promote narratives of "private interpretations based on private interpretations".

I think Anthony Weiner should step right out of his political ambitions. Because he fucked up in terms of popular vote.
But that's as far as I'd take it. His fuckup didn't offend *me*. The naivete of his "boner" is totally prohibitive of many things, first on the list being promoting him as political figurehead. It ain't going to happen.

only to his wife's career, but to Hillary if she runs (*disclaimer: she's running). I loved Weiner when he was in congress, and taking the fight to the Republicans, but clearly he not only had a fall, but is having trouble getting back up (pun intended, for my own amusement). He needs to take a long breather, to reflect on things; in the meantime, he is rather a joke.

She's like a daughter to Hillary and Bill. They both care a lot about her. Weiner, on the other hand, is like the creepy son in law that they only tolerate because he's married to their "daughter". Although at this point they probably won't even want to look at him.

. . . is that it may have prompted New Yorkers -- who, in the face of his latest self-destructive antics, were suddenly faced with the prospect of Christine Quinn taking the lead -- to take a closer, better look at the other candidates. Latest polling shows Bill De Blasio taking the lead, and this, IMO, is a good thing!

His main asset is Huma's tight relationship with the Clintons, while they can maintain a certain distance. Working for him was an entree to to the Clinton circle. If he turns that into (even more of) a liability, he's going to find himself on a very short leash (with muzzel and cone-collar).
