Bay Bridge reopens to traffic after bomb scare

The Bay Bridge was closed in both directions Friday afternoon after a suspicious device was reported on the Treasure Island on-ramp, the California Highway Patrol said.

The device was called in at 12:52 p.m., said Officer Ron Simmons, a CHP spokesman. Officers immediately shut down the eastbound on-ramp and the westbound off-ramp, he said.

The closure of the entire bridge in both directions began at about 2:45 p.m., as CHP officers worked to clear all vehicles from the bridge.

Traffic was flowing freely again without escorts at 3:30 p.m., but the Treasure Island on-ramp and off-ramp are both expected to remain closed for at least another hour, Simmons said.

With all the cops acting like cats in a room full of rocking chairs, any stupid thing can make them overreact to untold proportions.
