Ronell Wilson, who killed two undercover police detectives during a failed gun sting operation in Staten Island in 2003, was sentenced to death on Wednesday. He is the only person to be handed the death penalty by a federal jury in New York in six decades.
The jury deliberated for five hours before reaching its decision.
The verdict was the second time that Mr. Wilson was sentenced to death for shooting the detectives, James V. Nemorin and Rodney J. Andrews. A jury sentenced to him to death after an earlier trial in 2007, but an appellate court overturned the sentence while letting the conviction stand. Prosecutors brought a new case and won the death verdict on Wednesday.
